Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi,
My husband is diabetes type 2, but with the added complication of having had colon cancer which has left him with a very short gut. In addition to the diabetes, for which he takes tablets, he cannot eat seeds, nuts, fibre (including many fruits and vegetables) or skins. Life has suddenly become quite difficult. Any advice anyone, please?
Thanks,
Anne.

Hi Anne and welcome
Sorry to hear of all the stress seemingly happening for your husband and of course you at this time. I guess it's all about being there being tolerant and parcel. It's a good start that you have joined up here . Do make sure if your husband can or will even have a look for himself at any subsequent replied you get. What diabetes medication is he on

Welcome to the forum Anne Smith

Sorry to hear about your husband's extra diagnosis. You're right that diet is an important part of managing diabetes, along with exercise / activity medication, plus losing weight (if overweight).
With diabetes, carbohydrate control (not just sugar) is the key feature. You're right that higher fibre foods, seeds etc are recommended as they are absorbed at a slower rate. But that assumes a full length large bowel.
As your husband has two significant health issues, with conflicting dietary issues, it would be worth asking for referral to a dietician.

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I'm sorry to hear about your husbands health problems and hope he has made a full recovery from the cancer! Have you not been offered a referral to a dietician from your GP? I know the diabetic clinic have specialist diabetic dietician as managing diabetes is all about managing carbohydrates eg bread, pasta, sugar etc.

What does your husband currently eat? Does he check his blood glucose levels himself with a meter?

Tell me about short gut!

I have rather strange guts, with lots missing. Over time, I'm learning what suits me and what doesn't. (I should have bought shares in toilet paper before I had my op... I would now be a millionaire:D). I envy people on here who can keep their blood sugar in single figures. Practically everything I eat sends my numbers into the stratosphere😱

It's a real dilemma, knowing that as someone with diabetes you should eat less processed food, but not having the gut to deal with fibre etc.

Good luck
