New - anxious

Hi @just a muggle welcome to the forums, fully understand your situation getting a diagnosis can seem some kind of sentence and trying to understand it can take a time. The forums are a great place to find out the information you need and can be used to supplement what you receive from your diabetes nurse/doctor.

You may want to post things like your HbA1c and whether you have been prescribed medication as this helps in providing you with the right support.

I was diagnosed end of September with a HbA1c of 86 (mmol/L of 11.6). Since then I have upped my exercise, moved to a low carb diet and tried to maintain my weight (I don't need to lose any). My current position is that I average a mmol/L of 6 during the day and slightly over 7 in the evening. Things are improving for me and the best advice I can give (others will be far more helpful) is to take ownership and then action to improve the situation

The recommendation to move to a low carb diet is a good one in my view and the Freshwell app and web site are often recommended.

Welcome to the forum @just a muggle

Be kind to yourself. Feeling like you are is very common. Many people liken getting a diagnosis with a long-term condition like diabetes to a form of grieving - and it can be accompanied by the overwhelming torrent of emotions that can involve. Including denial, anger, bargaining, and depression.

Hopefully you can gradually move towards acceptance?

Many forum members over the years have found Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed a practical and pragmatic account of a woman coming to terms with her own diabetes. It’s just one woman’s experience, but there might be some thoughts in there that resonate with you?

Good luck, and keep asking your own questions of forum members too 🙂

It is often a shock to get a diabetes diagnosis but sometimes it can be a relief as it explains symptoms that you may have been having and once you fid out what is the cause you can do something about it and that will make a huge difference.
People will be in a better position to give you some suggestions that will be appropriate if you give a bit of information about your diagnosis, what your HbA1C is and have you been prescribed any medication as that will determine what dietary approach will be suitable.
The main thing is not to panic and make a sensible plan for making some lifestyle changes. To that end have a look at this link as there is good explanation as well as some meal plans based on the suggested no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi and welcome, lots of good advice already, please give us a bit more info about your situation if you can, eg: when diagnosed, what reading you had after blood tests, what meds you are on, etc. cheers
