Hi all, this is all new to me and don't really know where to start. I was diagnosed type 2 about 18 months ago with a blood sugar level of 7.2. I was put onto metformin. Since then my blood sugar has continue to rise. It was, as of yesterday 21.5, my tablets have increased to 2000mg per day and its not coming down. Sick of telling doc that s have permanent pins and needles in my feet. They don't seem to take any notice. Now I have the added proc of thrush, which I understand comes with out of control blood sugar. Can anyone give me some advice please. At the end of my tether here. Thanks

Hi Cath, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your problems - has your doctor not tried oyu on any medications? Are they sure that you are Type 2? There is a form of diabetes called LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood), also known as Type 1.5, which can be mistaken for Type 2 in the early stages. There are tests that can be done to determine if this applies to you. Typically, in such cases, ordinary Type 2 medication fails to bring levels under control because the pancreas is gradually losing the ability to produce insulin - it is effectively a slow form of Type 1. Do you have any family who are Type 1 or Type 2?

I would go back to your doctor and ask if this is a possibility. If he/she doesn't know, then ask to be referred to a diabetes specialist. All the problems you describe are consistent with high blood sugar levels, but once you are on the correct treatment these problems should hopefully be temporary.

Hi and thank you for replying. Both parents are type 2 and so was grandfather. The medication I'm still on is metformin. But it isn't helping.

That's quite a heritage! Has the doctor suggested trying anything else besides the metformin?

What kind of a diet are you on ? And when are you testing - 2 hours after a meal ?
Perhaps you should read Maggie Davey's Open Letter to a Newly Diagnosed Type 2 ...

Some sort of tablet has been mentioned, can't remember the name but it involves taking my blood sugar before I drive, and several times a day. It's really getting to the point where it's getting of down. I have got more information off you in 5 mins than I have off the doc in months. I have an app on Monday and I'm going to ask about type 1.5. Thanks again x

Sounds like a medication called gliclazide which encourages your pancreas to produce more insulin. With this drug there is a possibility of low blood sugars which is why you would need to test before driving. Do you know what your blood sugar levels are when you wake in the morning?

No I don't. But I have just got a kit today to do that. I'm not on any special diet etc but I do watch what I eat. But with Christmas coming up followed by all January in India, I can't see me watching what I eat. And to be honest. I am getting to the point, where I don't care. Lets hope the visit to the docs on Monday will help. X

Do test when you get up in the morning, and if you could test before and then 2 hours after eating your meals then it will give you an idea of how your blood sugar is behaving. You say you normally watch what you eat - have you tried keeping a food diary and recording the amount of carbohydrates in the food you eat and drink? This can really help you to identify areas where you might substitute things with more 'diabetes-friendly' items, or reduce portions etc. If you would like, you could post a day's meals on here and we could make some suggestions for you. There's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy an interesting and varied diet, you just need to know how things affect you personally and keep things in moderation. 🙂

Try not to get down about things. The high blood sugars will be affecting your mood, and once you start to get things under better control you will feel so much better! Have a browse of our 'Useful Links' thread, and let us know how the appointment goes or if we can help in any way 🙂

I can't thank you all enough. I will start testing in the morning. And I will keep a diary. Thanks again x

Cath, you appear to have high levels generally, so the actually increase as a consequence of your food looks worse than it is. What was your level before tea? How long after eating was the 16.6? And did you take your morning test as soon as you woke, or after your cup of tea? It's important to know the pre-meal level so you can see how much you rise after eating that particular meal, so test before and then either one or two hours afterwards. Also, when you wake in the morning, your liver will often give you an extra boost of glucose (which you probably would rather not have, but it's fine if you're not diabetic!), so testing immediately on waking gives you a better indication of how your levels have been overnight.

It does sound as thought you need some help to get those 'base' levels down. If you were around 6 before meals then a rise of 2-3 mmol/l wouldn't look so bad, but if you are 14 pre-meal then the post meal of 16.6 looks very scary if you didn't know you had only risen 2.6 (if you see what I mean). What you are eating does not look bad, but it is important to know those other facts before any conclusions can be made.
