Hi guys ,

Firsty of all hope all of you are fine and fit.

New diagnosed T2 although I have symptoms on about a year (frequent urination and thirst)

Very high blood sugar at 10.5

I start metformin and low carb diet almost keto. Iam also obese and 41 years old .

Im very worried since I have noticed on about a year but did not pay attention to that I have foams -proteins in my urine.(it was more foamy after eating carbs )

This means that I have already kidney disease?or it can be reversible with reducing BS and loosing weight.(im scared to death about dialysis)

Anyone with similar experience with proteins in urine will help.

Note that I have health anxiety and when I googled protein urine made me sick :(

Welcome @bluegirl Was your 10.5 a one-off glucose level test or was it an HbA1C blood test from your arm showing your average sugars over 3 months?

arm blood test with fasting -sorry am not aware for the figures yet

Ok, well it would be useful if you could find out if it was a one-off snapshot of your blood glucose - that is, what your blood sugar happened to be at that very moment, or whether it was an HbA1C test which looks at the level of glycation to estimate your average blood sugar over 3 months. From what you’ve described, it’s not totally clear as you don’t normally have to fast for HbA1C tests.

Foamy urine can be caused by a number of things eg dehydration. If your blood sugar is high, you could be slightly dehydrated.

Foamy urine can sometimes mean protein but it can mean other things too so you shouldn’t assume it’s protein. If you’re concerned, speak to your doctor who can do some simple tests to take a look.

Its the average for 3 months,my fasting glucose was 279.
The reason iam too much worried it is i drink a lot of water -of course i was thirsty all the time due to uncontrolled bs levels.
when i checked on line what proteins in urine means it is saying kidney failure .

Yes, it can mean kidney problems but it doesn’t always mean kidney problems. In order to find out how your kidneys are functioning, you need to see a doctor and have some tests. Foamy urine alone does not automatically mean you have kidney problems.

You can drink a lot of water, but if your blood sugar is high, you’ll just urinate more and so can still be dehydrated even though you’re drinking a lot.

The best way to keep your kidneys healthy is to control your blood sugar. Do you test your own blood sugar at home? If so, what results are you getting?

Hi @bluegirl. I see you are posting from Cyprus. Are you resident there?

I only ask to make sure that anybody replying to your post is likely to be UK based and the protocols for diabetes diagnosis and treatment may well be different in Cyprus to those we are familiar with. That's not a problem, but it is worthwhile getting it clear to make sure posts are relevant and avoid the confusion that can arise when numbers are quoted.

For example you quote a blood sugar at 10.5. Do you know what units that was quoted in?

Hi Docb yes correct i am posting from Cyprus 🙂 i have told that 10.5 is on average 240 as said am not familiar yet!i will investigate it further though.I know I will reduce BS since I went almost keto(I take only carbs from Vegies and 1 slice protein bread) my main worry is protein in urine .As I have health anxiety you understand what is going on now inside my head.

Welcome to the forum @bluegirl

Did your 10.5 have any units with it? It could be a long-term blood glucose measure called HbA1c which is given in either % or mmol/mol depending on where you are in the world. 10.5% is the same as 91mmol/mol

Alternatively 10.5 could have been a 'spot check' finger prick reading just of your glucose level at that time. The recommended range for people with T1 is 4-7mmol/L (72-56mg/dl) before meals and no higher than 8.5mmol/L (153mg/dl) by 2 hours after meals.

The 240 you mention seems likely to be 240mg/dl which is equivalent to 13.3mmol/L

It can be tricky to interpret the results people mention without knowing the units 🙂

Has your urine been tested for microalbuminuria? Or are you just using a visual inspection of foaminess? I would try not to worry until you have a definitive lab test result about your kidney function. Urine can be affected by many things, and the Internet is full of scary stories.

Diabetes is generally a slow-moving disease, and kidney issues usually come on slowly. Wait until you have results from your Dr. 🙂

It is easy to panic about something unexpected, like the frothy urine. When my daughter was a kid she panicked as as her urine was red, we then realised she had eaten quite a lot of beetroot.
So ask for the tests before jumping to conclusions.

I feel so ashamed for letting my self that way -i mentioned iam obese? already drop 5 pounds in a week however i feel so bad & scared that may damaged my kidneys at this age
