Hello my name is Chris, i have type 2 diabetes, i have not been very succseful on many medications, i am seeing consultant who has done lots of tests on me and said he is concerned that some gland is not working, and with out telling me he has booked me in for MRI scan i am so worried as i have such a bad phobia and i know i cant go in that machine i am also scared that they are looking for something sinister,,, Sorry this is long winded just stressed so much today..
Thanks Chris x:confused:

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum. Very sorry to hear about what you are going through at the moment :( Have you been diagnosed long? Are the doctors aware of your phobia? If not, you should certainly inform them, they may be able to offer you some counselling beforehand or fnd some way to put you more at ease. I'm not medically trained so I'm afraid I can't speculate on what the MRI may be needed for. How long will you have to wait for it?

I know it's not easy, but do try to stay calm and distract yourself from the worry. I would also ask what the test is looking for specifically, as knowing this may help calm your fears.

I hope everything goes well and that you have the best possible outcome, please let us know, or if you have any questions that we may be able to help with, just ask 🙂

Welcome to the forum Chris 🙂

They don't by any means just lob you on it and leave you to it, whole thing was very reassuring and they play you music (you can't usually have your i-pod on or anything like that because they keep talking to you thoughout) and you can ask for anything you like really, though prolly head banging stuff would be out, I dunno, I asked for something lovely, light and relaxing eg the Flower Duet - and that's exactly what I got, apparently 'a lot of people ask for that' LOL

I'm not all that into opera really, either! but that piece, if you close your eyes, which I most certainly did - sort of comes over me in waves of pleasure .....

Hi Chris, welcome. I had other problems when diagnosed and whilst it is all added stress, you will get through it bit by bit. If your anxious re the scan, mention this to your GP and when you go for the scan. Help is always available.

Beware the internet when you don't really know what it's all about Chris! I hope that the consultant is able to reassure you and calm your concerns, good luck 🙂

I've had to have a couple of MRI's myself, including one of my pituitary. I was able to make a CD of some of my favourite music and they played that for me. I picked something with quite a heavy beat as the rumbling noise the machine makes becomes part of the background music. Going on a journey in my imagination helped too - I pictured myself going for a walk that I'm familiar with and that helped to distract me as well. Hope it all goes well for you.🙂

Hi
my mri scan was not connected with my diabetes but as i suffer from claustrophobia i knew i would struggle with the mri scan - i just knew i couldnt go in that machine, and i cant wear earphones as i feel i cant breather with them on - they prescribed me a tranquiliser which helped and i kept my eyes closed and just pictured myself lying on a beach. the staff were wonderful and they kept talking to me and reassuring telling me how well i was doing and i just kept brathing in and out and pictruing myself on that beach, it was very noisy without the head phones but lovely and warm
i knew i had to do it so i did - i hope and pray yours is ok

Hi Chris,

I had this scan as part of a whole lot of diabetes tests just over a year ago.
I was absolutely petrified as very claustrophobic. I did tell them and once they realised how bad I was they gave me an injection that made me very floaty and the scan was done no problem.

As already mentioned though they do play you music of your choice through headphones and talk to you and reassure you - and can get you out in a second (which is what happened with me).

If I had to have another one, I would have an injection again, but believe me I really am claustrophobic.

I think you will be quite surprised at how good the team are. They want you calm and relaxed so they can scan you correctly. I am sure they will help you all the way through, so please dont be scared anymore.🙂

Hello 🙂
Everyone else has really said what I was going to but I thought I would leave you a message as I've had two MRIs recently (one for brain, so I only went into the scanner up to my shoulders/chest and the other I went in full body). Neither were very comfortable, but like others said, the staff are lovely and very understanding. Plus you will have a button to press if you feel uncomfortable, worried etc. I soon pressed it, and the nurse came in and sat next to me, giving super reassurance and I settled down.

I imagine the staff there see this numerous times each day. I am assuming you may only go into the scanner up to your shoulders/chest as I did for the brain scan ? I kept my eyes closed even before I went in which helped. Maybe you could ask for a tranquiliser, like someone else said on here, just to take the edge off your nerves.
Good luck and I hope it goes okay. 🙂

Thanks you all so much.

Sorry i have only just got back on i lost the link and could not find it to come back here.
I did not have the MRI i was so scared i have been ill with the worry. I seen the consultant yesterday and he explained they do need scan but they can start treatment with out having to go through it at moment, they said from my bloods the ones that keep coming back with a problem are all to do with the gland in my brain not releasing the hormones it should be doing, i have so many signs apparantly that ley yhem know it is what the problem is, at the moment my sugars are very high so they have increased med's and i see them again in 16 weeks they will do one more blood test before i see them and if as they are expecting it to be the same they will start me on an injection of growth hormone that should start to make things improve such as the major tiredness and high sugars not responding to meds and the feeling of general illness...
The consultant was so understanding of my fear it was such a relief..
Just wanted to update you all and thank you all again..
Hugs to all Chris x🙂
