New and quite confused

Not sleeping can be caused by a number of things connected with stress. I had a job which I loved but was always thinking about what needed to be done or going over things that had happened that day and how to do things better but somehow it was all consuming. Then just a couple of years before I retired we had a new manager who started to bully me from the moment he started and then I was going home at the end of the day as a wreck in tears and couldn't sleep because of that. He basically forced me to make the decision to retire, then along came Covid and the worry of my daughters who work on the front line in the NHS so everything just was going round and round in my head.
I feel much better now as I realised that nobody had the right to make me feel like that and I had to move on.
That boss sounds really horrible! Hope your daughters have both been ok! And glad you feel better now! Some bosses I’m sure bully out of insecurity!

Perhaps I am an early type 1 then, I’ll just have to be patient. Ah you were super young as well. Do you think it’s impacted your life much? Or you just needed to make small changes? I’ve taken two days off work but I’ll go back in tomorrow. Will mainly make sure that I get a lunch break half way through the day. Sometimes when we have loads of patients we don’t eat so that’s going to have to stop, and also I can’t just quickly snack on a few biscuits now I guess. I find if I go to bed early I just think about things and don’t sleep and if I go to bed later I go straight to sleep but only get 5-6 hours . Thanks for your reply!
Your welcome… anytime. How this has impacted my life has been more mental than physical. I put myself through a lot of unnecessary panic and anxiety. Most people will tell you that they all found it hard to begin with but bit by bit you do find your way and adjust. I wish you luck at work tomorrow. Make sure you put your foot down if you have to, you need to look after yourself ! Xx

You could try some protein bars for a quick snack instead of a biscuit. |There are various Protein nut based bars which are low carb about 10g per bar. Nature Valley, KIND, supermarket own. Just found some Morrisons ones at 7g carb per bar.

Welcome to the forum @Becky22

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Hope the results of your antibody tests throw some light on your diabetes type. 🙂

Thank you! I’ve just switched to protein bars and the ones you’ve suggested sound nice!

Hi Emma, my anti bodies came back positive, so looks like they have caught LADA early whilst I still have some insulin as there are no ketones or symptoms. No idea how long it’s being going on in the background but glad it’s been spotted now. I should be seeing a specialist in the next two weeks. I’m also going to speak to my boss about dropping a day a week at work as this should give me time to sort out GP appointments, do things like going to the dentist, and fitting in a run, without having to stress about doing it all to fit around a 5-6 day working week. It’s weird and kind of sad to think now that my remaining cells are being attacked by my own anti bodies and there’s not a lot to be done about it.

I hope that you are well and that your betes are behaving! Make sure you look after yourself! Thanks so much for messaging me! Xxx

Welcome @Becky22 🙂 I’d wait for the results of the antibodies test. That will help determine your diabetes type. Having Type 2 in your family puts you at increased risk, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have Type 1. It’s very important to rule out Type 1, which often comes on more slowly in adults.

So, that’s your priority - making sure you’re not actually Type 1. The antibodies tests do take a while to come through.

LADA is just a slower-onset form of Type 1. My consultant doesn’t even use the term and just calls it Type 1. MODY is genetic diabetes and comes in various types. The testing for that is expensive and rarely done. You wouldn’t be looking at that at this point in time.

My advice is to keep an open mind re whether you’re Type 1 or Type 2. Also, ask for copies of your test results, not just “normal”, “ok”, “fine”. I’d also jot down some family info about which relatives have Type 2 and at what age they developed it, etc.
Hi Inka, it turns out I had GAD of 25 and the threshold for type 1 was 5. So it looks like we have caught LADA early on whilst I still have some insulin, as they haven’t detected any ketones yet. I think I’ll probably start some form of insulin soon. Thanks

@Becky22 hasnt had the results of her antibody tests yet so this is a general comment as we don’t know her type. I posted this link yesterday and I think it’s helpful:

The process of Type 1 takes time. It starts before you have any clue it’s going on, and it can progress quite slowly. There’s then a final shove sometimes that pushes you over the line. This shove can be illness, pregnancy, stress, etc. People sometimes focus on one thing that caused it and it’s always a recent thing, but the process will have been going on for some time before that thing.
Just re read this and you were spot on. LADA caught early. Not sure what my final shove was but I expect it’s having a poor work life balance so I’m hoping to drop a day a week at work soon. Many thanks for your message again

That’s great that you now have a proper diagnosis @Becky22

Hi Becky, so glad you got a final diagnosis. Just out of interest did they give your your actual antibody results? I’m still confused about mine. Hopefully now you have your answers although it still a lot to get your head around, you can see a path forward. I hope your new work routine benefits you and I really wish you all the best. Im doing okay Thankyou , no definitive answers is the biggest problem for me but I continue to have hope that things will get better. Please continue to post. It’s lovely to hear progress from others in a similar situation xx
Edit… sorry just noticed you posted your antigad results x

I’m so pleased you’ve got the correct diagnosis @Becky22 🙂 I know it’s always a shock and an upset getting such a diagnosis and it does take a while to get used to, but you’ve been saved from months, or even years, of stress and faffing about, so it’s a positive thing.

The ketones can come and go, along with the erratic insulin production. Even if you only need tiny doses, early introduction of insulin can help preserve the remaining beta cells for longer. Don’t be afraid of it. If your team are thinking of introducing it soon, that’s a good thing. I get muddled with what I’ve said in each thread so apologies if I’m repeating myself, but too many people with adult-onset Type 1, which often presents with a slow-onset, are left far too long without insulin, causing stress and potentially damage.
