Hi all,

Was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about two weeks ago, and have been given twice daily insulin injections to deal with it. Have been reading around all sorts of things to do with blood sugar control, diet and insulin, I am now very confused about all sorts of things.

Going to the dietician next week, so hopefully things will become clearer.

In the meantime, if anybody can suggest some sensible snacks to eat between meals that would be very helpful...

Regards,

R

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum 🙂 Two injections a day can be a bit restrictive, you sholud ask your nurse/doctor about MDI (multiple daily injections) where you calculate the amount of insulin you need according to the food you want to eat. As for snacks, I've found that the best things are low carb stuff like peanuts or cheese.

I'd recommend you get a copy of Ragnar Hanas' Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults as it will give you an excellent grounding in what to expect and how to tackle things.

Please ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' here! 🙂

Hi Richard and welcome im a type 2 so cant really help with insulin question but wanted to welcome you on board.Good luck at the dieticains once i saw mine things became alot clearer and it really helped me manage my D.

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum, but sorry you have had to join us.

The best snacks are low carb things - nuts, cheese, olives. Next best are things with a low glycemic index (where the carbohydrate is released slowly).

thanks for the welcome guys. Very happy to hear that cheese, nuts and olives are the way forward snack wise...🙂

Salted pop corn is not too bad either (in moderation) as it is so light you can eat a small bag without getting too much carb.

Hi Richard

Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi Richard, welcome to the forum.

Hi Richard, I was on twice daily Insulatard at first as well, and I found that once I got the doses about right I had to have a morning or afternoon snack to make sure I didn't have a hypo. If you have that problem too then i would suggest more carby snacks, about 10-20g carbs was required for me, so that could be: an apple, banana or 2 satsumas, 2 oatcakes, a digestive biscuit, a small cereal bar (e.g. Alpen Lite), a Penguin bar.... I also needed to have supper so I didn't hypo in the night, this used to be something like a slice of toast, small bowl of cereal....Hope that helps. In time, when you get your head round it all, I found it better to change to multiple daily injections and learn how to change the dose for what I wanted to eat, so I would suggest you discuss this with your team when you have an appointment.

Best of luck, feel free to pop on here to ask lots of questions!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Like most of the others said, low carb snacks are good - cheese - nuts (walnuts r nice) - small amount popcorn. A little snack i have sometimes is cheeese wrapped in ham, and also you can put slices of cheese in your microwave (on baking paper) zap them for like a minute and you have cheesy crisps!

If you have any other questions, big or small as away everyone is very friendly 🙂

Hi and welcome.

Low GI snacks are preferable. With two injections a day you may have to "feed your insulin".

Consider talking to your healthcare team about multiple daily injections (MDI) as there are benefits which many people consider outweigh the extra jabs.

Hi Richard,

Are you using novomix30?..

Before i moved to carb counting i used this method and needed the snacks also. All the above people are correct in suggesting nuts, seeds etc.. But occasionally you'll find you need snacks with slightly higher carbs.. I found rice cakes (snack a jacks do lots of different flavours) and things like cheese dippers to be best in this cake.. Dont forget that most meats (except things like sausages that are bulked with rusk) are carb free, cheese and eggs are too.

Welcome to the forum.

thanks guys,

Lots of helpful ideas there, have updated the shopping list accordingly, so we'll see how we get on now...
