Relationship to Diabetes

Hi
I was diagnosed three weeks ago and feeling scared, confused and angry. Why did I get this disease as I am not particularly overweight and its not in the family? I have so many questions!

When the doctor diagnosed diabetes i cut out sugar straight away then started to feel quite nauseous. I am not sure what i can eat and what I should avoid.

i am feeling constantly tired and unhappy.

I have an appointment with the diabetic nurse on Wednesday not sure what she will be doing as I have had blood tests every week since i was diagnosed.

I am sorry to let off steam but i just needed to talk to someone
😡

Hi Holly, welcome to the forum 🙂 Unfortunately, no-one knows the real reason why people get diabetes, although you are more likely to be overweight when diagnosed. There are many thousands of people who are of normal weight when diagnosed, and also many overweight people who don't get it.

The tiredness and mood swings will be partly due to the shock and stress, but also due to your blood sugar levels being higher than normal. When you start to bring them under control then you will begin to feel much better. Have a look in this useful links thread for some recommendations for new Type 2s

Try not to overwhelm yourself with information at this stage, wait until you have seen the nurse and then you will have a better idea of what treatment regime they recommend for you. If you have any questions, we will be able to help, so try not to worry although I know it is hard - things will get better! 🙂

Hey there hun!! Welcome to the forum!! I hope that it helps you, I know it has done me!! Don't apologise to rant either, when you're needing to get things off your chest it's best that you do so!! On here the majority of us will be able to relate to what you're saying one way or another and offer advice and support ... so feel free to just release!! XxXxX

Hi Holly. Although you have no diabetes in your family, it may be that an ancestor had a tendency towards it and you've been unlucky enough to develop it.

The 21st (more 20th) century diet is not the best and can put extra stresses on your pancreas. And so here you find yourself.
