Type 1.5 LADA
Hi everyone.
Newly diagnosed as type 1 (37 years old)
I was misdiagnosed as type 2 four months ago.
I'm not yet on insulin, so i can only control my bloods with metformin, exercise and carb control.
I've taken this very seriously since my initial diagnosis and I'm testing my bloods regularly.
I use the carbs and cals app and I'm honest with what info i input.
The issue I'm having is that in order to control my bloods, I'm running at a massive calorie defecit of around 1500 to 2000 cals per day.
I'm not at all convinced the carbs and cals app is acurate.
I feel fine, I'm not drastically losing weight and feel full.
Does anyone else have any of these issues.

Hiya

I have to say no I've never come across this, neither have I ever known any other Type 1 able to maintain life without insulin being injected or infused every single day of their lives. There is however a type of diabetes known as LADA, which behaves like Type 2 to begin with, and responds OK to T2 drugs, until the autoimmune nature of LADA starts taking over so that the people respond just as if they'd been diagnosed T1 that morning - so will need insulin in order to survive.

Can you tell us more about your re-diagnosis and especially whether insulin jabs will be introduced soon?

I am a Type 1 (confirmed this morning after not knowing which I was as recently diagnosed) and cannot live without insulin (5 injections a day for rest of my life) as my pancreas doesn't produce any insulin so seems strange that you are not on insulin, I would ask again if you are type 1 just to double check as you should be on insulin.

I've never head of someone being diagnosed as type 1 and not going straight on to insulin, I was whipped into hospital and put straight onto a sliding scale and wasn't allowed home until I could show the doctors that I could manage to inject myself xx

Hi. I was diagnosed type 1 Lada in april 2018 after 7 years as type 2. I'm 47.

I have to agree with the first person that replied and it sounds like Type 1 Lada. If I'm right it means Late or Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood.

In a nutshell your pancreas produces enough insulin to get by but at a certain point it starts to slow down to a point where it packs up completely. That's how it gets confused with Type 2.

I'm now on insulin and getting much better.

In answer to your initial question about Carbs and Cals. I use it as a guideline only as I've also found it inaccurate on some foodstuffs.
Best bet is check the labels.

All the best

Mark

Speaking as someone who was diagnosed wrongly as type 2, it is amazing how long you can limp along without insulin as long as you drastically reduce carbs and put up with high blood sugar readings. However you should instead be able to eat a more normal diet and be given insulin.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Whether it is T1 or LADA the same things happens, just at different rates. As @stephknits said you can limp along whilst there are some Beta cells chucking out some insulin but then have to suffer the consequences of higher BGs. If you have some quick acting insuoin you can gradually adjust the amounts as your pancreas reduces the quantities it produces. This way you would be able to keep things a lot more level.
Well worth giong back and asking.
