Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm new to this forum. I never knew I diabetic till one day I tripped on a manhole cover. I fell and fractured my hip. It was the paramedic in the ambulance who told me my blood sugar level was 21. I was having a can of tango or fanta every single day with my lunch. so I stopped that and my sugar levels plummeted, all though have since been told thats not the best thing to do. anyway with some other adjustments to my diet and the help of metformin and sitagliptin my blood sugars are currently 7.3 and falling.
I try not to let it bother me too much. one thing I do now is to use the traffic light system when I'm shopping. it seems to work.
last week I again had a fall on my way walking to the car from work. result of that was that I'm now recovering from a cracked rib. and thats why I'm here talking to you, instead of which I should be hard at work.
so you see you never know what life is going to throw at you. bye for now. CM.

Welcome to the forum, Clive.

I am from Italy, as you can guess by the photo, so my experience is a bit different compared to traffic light system, and there are person more expert than me on the subject.

As you have found eating habits are a staple to manage and control diabetes.
Unfortunately what is advertised and explained about eating isn't correct, especially with people with diabetes.
What I could advise you is to go to the library and get the books on the subject and focus on nutrition.

Basically remember that sugar isn't the only problem. Starchy food in excess is a problem too especially in highly refined foods, like white bread, pasta, pizza, rice, and that industrially processed foods are full of hidden starches and sugars.
Fats aren't the evil thing that advertisers are depicting, and also the semaphore system.

But please don't trust me on the subject. Take some books from the library, if you, like me are a bookworm, or visit this site, ot the USA or Canada ones to get tips on the subject and then feel free to ask here.

Hello Clive and welcome to the forum. 🙂 You sound as clumsy as me! I won't go out now unless I'm pushing something or hanging onto somebody. Last time I tripped over my own feet and broke my elbow. What a plonker. :D

Sympathies Clive ! - broken bones - or anything that causes any inflammation anywhere in your body - causes our BG to increase one heck of a lot. So if you were already 'on the way' with Type 2 - it can't have helped. At least - it brought about your diagnosis and you got the right medication asap, so actually it did you a (back-handed) favour! LOL

I did know this about inflammation 'in theory' however when I broke a bone for the first time in my life in October I got a personal demo of the whole scenario - quite shocking to me, how much more insulin I have had to inject just to get my BG 'reasonable' whereas before I could control it pretty well. Still on approx. 15% extra, 6 weeks later.

Finally high BG also hinders healing - whether it's just a graze or an amputation - so keep on top of it and continue to work hard on diet exercise and medications to keep it there.

HI Jenny. to tell you the truth I wasn't sure if it was because of the diabetes I fell over, or the fall caused the diabetes. still not sure now.

Depends Clive - have you got 100% feeling in your tootsies? If in doubt - try and get an appointment with the nurse at your surgery who does the footchecks - it only takes 5 or 10 minutes to do.

Yes Jenny, feet are fine, just got hard skin but had that for years. nurse checked all that last week at the surgery. got to go back there this morning because when I was there with my cracked rib they did a ecg, and they not happy with the results so going to do it again.
once all this stuff is sorted I might be able to get back to work I hope.

You can't rely on the traffic light system to show you the foods good for a diabetic, it highlights sugar, not carbohydrates. The true situation is shown in much smaller numbers on the information panel - usually on the back or side of the pack but it can be hidden away under a seam in the plastic on some packs. Sneaky eh?

Nothing as bad as a cracked rib ! Hope its settling down & well done for getting shot of them cans of sugar. Welcome Clive 🙂
