Neuropathy???

Hi I use this forum on behalf of my sister, she is T1 and was diagnosed in 2016 at he age of 48 and is a terrible worrier which is why I come on here instead of her.Today she went to her GP as she has been experiencing some numbness to the outside of her foot and if she points or flex’s it she feels very sharp pain. The doctor looked straight at her blood sugar readings and without asking anything else said “ oh this is due to your erratic blood sugar! You need to have better control of it and your foot will get better!” My sister was desperately upset as she does have erratic readings but she keeps it well under control all day it spikes when she sleeps and that is why she wears the Librefreestyle on her arm , her diabetic nurse is trying to work out why this is happening. She has suffered with plantar fasciitis in the past and she feels the pain is similar but not the same. Is it that obvious that she is suffering neuropathy just like that? Thanks kelly

It's very unusual to have neuropathy in one limb only. Unfortunately most Doctors see the word diabetes and automatically give a diagnoses of it's your diabetes. There is obviously no such condition except in the Drs head so your sister needs to push for a correct diagnoses.

Hi I’m noticing the same sharp pain at the moment when I flex my foot. I also have planter fasciitis in the same foot. It’s been on and off for a couple of weeks now but is starting to feel better with use of a support sock and ibuprofen gel I think I’ve pulled the tendons. I’m leaving it to see if it heals in another week or so if not will mention it. I hope your sister gets some answers soon as worrying about these complications is awful

I agree with @Pumper_Sue, you need to push for a proper diagnosis. I suffer badly from Neuropathy in both lower legs and feet and are very painful 24/7, I take Gabapentin and Duloxetine and my feet are checked every six weeks by a NHS Podiatrist. This was only after extensive Neurological test from the Dr DSN and quite a few Consultants, BGL`s are crucial in controlling the condition but she does need a diagnosis first.
