Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I'm new to this forum, I've been diabetic type 2 for a few years. I now have peripheral neuropathy which is gradually getting worse, does anyone have any advice that can help slow the process down , or help with the pain, I don't seem to get much help from my GP
TIA

Welcome @bren06 🙂 Sorry to hear about your neuropathy. Keeping tight control of your blood glucose should help. Also, there are some supplements that might help. However, please do check they’re compatible with any meds you might be on before trying them.

One is Alpha Lipoic Acid. You have to take a largish dose and it’s not cheap, but it’s actually prescribed for neuropathy in Germany. Also, benfotiamine (a special form of vitamin B1) and other B vitamins can help. For the Alpha Lipoic Acid, it’s best to build it up slowly - ie one 200mg tablet a day for a week or so, then two tablets, then 3. You’ll see they’re expensive but they do help.

Welcome to the forum.
How are you managing your condition, what if any medication are you taking and what about diet, are there any options there for reducing carb intake to get better blood glucose levels.

Just checked there are different strengths, do you recommend the 200mg to start with ?

Yes, because then you can build it up in increments. It helped a relative of mine who had neuropathy. They built up to 600mg per day, but after some weeks they were able to reduce that to a lower maintenance dose. Again, do check with your GP or pharmacist if you’re on other meds or have other medical conditions.

Welcome to the forum @bren06

Sorry to hear about your neuropathy :(

From reading others experiences over the years it seems like trying to keep your glucose levels as stable and in-range as you possible can help reduce nerve pain flare-ups. Reducing both glucose instability (how rapid and how many ups and downs you have) and glucose variation (a smaller gap between maximum high value and minimum low value) are both worthwhile. You are aiming for a gentler more undulating wave, rather than a jagged mountain range of glucose wobbles 🙂

Another member here @PattiEvans has previously mentioned a neuropathy blend that she found helpful for transient neuropathy - though as @Inka has said any supplements would need to be checked with your Dr or nurse (or a high st pharmacist) to ensure there aren’t any unwelcome interactions with anything else you may be taking. 🙂
