At risk of diabetes
Hello to everyone. Went to my doctor as I was having pains, pins and needles, heart palpitations and thought I might have a B12 deficiency.
I'm underweight and have a really good diet and hardly drink alcohol. I was amazed that I have Fatty liver and now Im Pre diabetic.......Everything I read is about regaining your health by diet, such as losing weight and going low carb/zero sugar. The problem is apart from cutting out the carbs, my diet is really good. I definitely do NOT want to lose weight. Is there any Thin peeps out there who can offer any advice? Oh and I'm adopted and so do not know about any family history of T2D or fatty liver and I'm of Asian/African/Arabic descent according to Ancestry International! Thank you for reading.

Hello @djp23 and welcome to the forum.
Being told you are at risk of diabetes can come as a bit of a shock if you weren't expecting it. People can have a fatty liver without being overweight and this visceral fat does increase the risk of diabetes.
Do you know what your hbA1c is? If you wish to share that information it will help us understand how far into the diabetes zone you are.
I was underweight when diagnosed but having very high blood glucose for some time caused this. I wrongly attributed my symptoms to stress and hot weather. I also thought my diet was mostly healthy but I now realise I was consuming far more carbohydrates than my body could deal with.
My diet since diagnosis and getting some good information and advice from this forum, was to reduce the carbs to 130g to 150g daily. As I wanted to regain some weight and muscle mass I increased my protein, fat and veggies and kept calorie intake to 2000 per day.
This together with medication and regular exercise has brought my blood glucose down. I am still work in progress but as the levels dropped I started gaining weight and feel much better.
Can you give us an idea of the type of meals you typically eat? Has your doctor prescribed medication or given you any dietary advice?
Sorry for the lengthy reply. No doubt others will be along to share their thoughts in a more succinct manner.

Good morning, Yes I do believe I put down fat straight to my liver! I have in the past suffered from quite a bit of stress and also eaten lots of carb heavy meals. Particularly after doing years of nightshifts. My hbA 1c was 41. I'm now doing IF and low carb and will take on board the information you have kindly supplied re keeping weight on with healthy fats and lots of good protein. I'm already eating grass fed meat and butter and organic eggs, I am zero sugar and no social drinks of anything fizzy! Literally throwing all my will power into eating clean, eating the right food and exercise. Thank you again for your kind input and advice.

Couple of things ... lots of folk have been diagnosed with diabetes when they are 'TOFI' - thin outside, fat inside. OTOH there are also morbidly obese folk who don't have fat surrounding their internal organs - for the simple reason that every single person on this planet - is different! so you can't tell what's occurring simply by looking at them and asking about their ethnicity.

As well as what we eat, how much we move is just as important. You haven't mentioned that.

If your HbA1C is 41mmol/mol you are actually just below even the prediabetes threshold which is 42-47mmol/mol so really just to keep things where they are then some modest changes would be sufficient. If you don't want to lose weight then healthy fats and protein whilst keeping the carbs to small portions with plenty of other veg and salads. Diet fizzy drinks are usually fine or sparking or still flavoured water.

Welcome to the forum @djp23

Hopefully a few modest tweaks to your menu will help to steer you away from a diabetes diagnosis.

We have a number of members who are either at risk of T2D or have a diagnosis who have never been overweight, and have to balance their menu carefully to keep their weight stable, while reducing any visceral fat that may be building up around their organs.

Let us know how things go 🙂
