I’ve upped my fibre but nothing seems to be happening. I’m worried the defecation impulse is gone. It appears to be almost a death sentence if that’s the case. I’m just so scared. In hospital they checked it wasn’t appendicitis and gave me an appointment for a colonoscopy. Nothing urgent. Trying to ring the doctors is hit and miss. I feel there no point to any of it, and then this virus! Every day is waking up to a Steven King novel. I feel sick

Quite a few of us on low carb diets use extra fibre supplements in or with our food/drink like chia seeds and/or psyllium husk (the same stuff that is in Fibogel which is often prescribed by GPs to help with bowel problems) to replace the fibre that our gut is no longer getting from wholegrains. It is important to drink plenty of water/fluids when using these products as they absorb water to form a gel which slides through the gut creating bulk and pushing what is ahead of it out.
It is not unusual to suffer constipation with low carb initially but once your body gets enough fibre from other sources it resolves. I found I was only going every other day, sometimes every 3 days when I started low carb and it was a struggle when I did go, but since using a fibre supplement I am much more regular and it happens much more easily.

Everyone is very kind. My husba has just gone to boots to get more laxatives. I hope they work. I’ve added linseed to my diet today and will try and eat more fibre but I eat loads of veg already

This sounds very familiar. It’s worrying me though, I’ve been using laxatives and suppositories though! I worry I’ve destroyed the impulse . Will it come back with added fibre?

Gosh, I’m shattered. I’m in so much pain. I’ll have to go rest. I’ll try and log on again tomorrow. In the meantime, thank you everyone for the help!

I know they are not low carb, but personally I find a few dried apricots most days are well worth the carbs.

I was just thinking, getting a bit of exercise really helps too both with bowel movement and neuropathy.... and anxiety for that matter. Can you manage a bit of a walk? Maybe your husband would go with you if you are feeling a bit vulnerable/anxious?

A dessert spoon of olive oil drizzled over your evening meal helps over a few days. You can’t taste it if you spread it over whatever you’re eating.
