Thank you for your welcome to Diabetes UK.
It is 04.32 I generally find myself awake due to my peripheral neuropathy and occipital neuralgia. I have had this condition for 12 years this year. It has taken over my life. I never exit my home alone. I am transferred via a hoist to my powered wheelchair, to my bed etc.
I am unable to stand alone, my beautiful wife looks after me as a full time carer.

If I hadn't ignored different people and there advice about Diabetes earlier on in my life maybe I would be OK.? Who knows!

I ended up in my wheelchair because my once employer refused on many occasions to allow me to check my bloods and take my insulin, I was told to wait because we were too busy. I had many hypos in my job and received no sympathy. I at times get angry because many times people were allowed to treat there addiction to tobacco but I was told to wait for my break to take my insulin and check my bloods.
Life is a blend of swings and roundabouts. I have just turned 60 years of age and see no change in my life other than more pain. I don’t like taking my pain medication because the after effects results in me spending more time in bed. Trying to enjoy time out with my family has been greatly affected, I last one hour out in my wheelchair before my wife needs to bring me home. I force her to return to time with the family, she has suffered greatly and should not suffer anymore!
I take many medications , Oxycodone, pre gablin, simvastatin, ramapril, quinine, aspirin, duloxitine, insulin.

I was wondering about trying CBD oil for the pain etc. I have asked various people about taking CBD oil, my pharmacy, Gp and they seem to give different advice because it would seem research has not been done on the effects etc.
Has anyone tried it? I know it is my choice but I would like to hear from anyone who has tried it and wonder if it helps. Does it affect my medication? Will it make me worse. Will it ease my pain? Be happy to receive any advice, messages etc.Thank you.

So sorry to hear you’re suffering @Bish777 I remember a recent post from a long-standing member here about CBD oil. Hopefully this will link you to it:

.
Thank you Inka for the link and the information I appreciate it very much.

I believe I will give it a try. The neuropathy in my feet, legs, arms and hands is horrible. I have occipital neuralgia in my head and face as well, sometimes my vision is very blurred. If I have them both at the same time my only option is morphine and bed.
Thank you again for your help. I am a retired Priest and Bishop hence Bish777 I will add you to my prayer list for pain relief. Prayer is often my better option for relief from pain. God bless

Pain is very wearing @Bish777 I hope the CBD oil helps. I’d say it was certainly worth a try. I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere here too.

Keeping your blood sugar in range as much as possible can help as well. I see you’re on insulin so that should give you some flexibility. There are also supplements that have been recommended. One is Alpha Lipoic Acid. You have to take a largish dose and it’s not cheap, but it’s prescribed for neuropathy in Germany. Also, benfotiamine (a special form of vitamin B1) and other B vitamins can help. As you’re on other medication, it would be sensible to check any supplements will suit you and your medication regime before buying any. Alpha Lipoic Acid can increase insulin sensitivity, which might mean you need to reduce your insulin a little. For that reason, it’s sensible to build up to the full neuropathy dose rather than leap right into it if you choose to try it.

Thank you for the information etc unfortunately I am in the UK and actually getting a doctors appointment can be very difficult, the NHS will only prescribe something which is cheap. I recently had an appointment with a pain specialist who prescribed a medication which would take away my pain and offer no side effects. The NHS would not pay for it.
As a disabled man with neuropathy my chiropodist prescribed a cream for my feet, my doctor refused to provide it to me instead prescibing cream which he knew was unsuitable, but was cheap!

I think you’re right that GPs wouldn’t prescribe such supplements. You’d have to buy them yourself. A relative with non-diabetic neuropathy used Alpha Lipoic Acid and benfotiamine but just bought them from Amazon, choosing a reputable brand. They did help and they’ve kept up with them but at a slightly reduced dose now to save money.
