"I CAN'T say a bad word about any of them.''

Those in the much-maligned NHS would have appreciated the words of my dad last Monday.

Just three hours after life-saving surgery he was lying in bed, tucking into a packet of biscuits provided by the kind folk on a hospital high-dependency ward.

Never mind the pipes which were sprouting from every orifice, dad likes his biscuits.

I couldn't quite work out whether his over-exuberance was thanks to a "high" from a pain-killer which was seeping through one of those tubes or was down to his relief at still being in the land of the living.

Either way, he couldn't stop thanking those who had helped him. From the skilled surgeon to the cleaners, he wanted them to know he appreciated them.
