Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, My name is Dee and I've been diabetic for around 5 years. I'm type 2 and when I first found out I tried to eat all the right foods. I'm obese and as I keep reminding myself ... I didn't get this fat eating healthy foods! I am fed up of having no energy and I need a kick start! I'm eating loads and loads of sweet stuff and as such am losing weight because of the diabetes and not because I'm watching my diet. My diabetes is out of control. I should be taking insulin plus metformin and all the other tablets the drs give for blood pressure, cholesterol etc etc. I'm not taking any of it. I haven't tested my bloods in months and due to the stuff I'm eating the figures would be 'off the scale'. I know I'm doing more harm than good but cannot stop! Has anyone else gone through this phase and how did you come out the other end?
Thanks
Dee

Hello Dee. I know it sounds simplistic but please get out and go for a walk as many times as you can. I know you will feel better if you get out in fresh air etc. Good luck & keep at it. 🙂

Hi Dee, welcome to the forum 🙂 You really need to speak to someone with professional experience to try and help you get off this cycle of self-harm :( Diabetes is such a sneaky illness that it can creep up gradually on you and then hit you with some very serious problems and you will suddenly find yourself regretting not taking better care of yourself. Please make an appointment with your doctor or nurse and confess all, as you have just done to us!

I am sure we have lots of members who can appreciate how you are feeling, but have succeeded in turning things around - so I hope you can find the strength to say enough is enough and start looking after yourself better. Diabetes can be managed well and it doesn't need to be a big part of your life if you just respect it and give it those few minutes each day so that it stays quietly in the background. Joining here is a great first step, because we do understand how difficult things can be - but can support you and help you turn things around. Start by testing again and recording what you are eating - make this your priority project and let us know just what the situation is, so we can help you make some good decisions and ask the right questions of your nurse or doctor.

I am expecting a report back with details of how you intend to get back on track very soon! Don't disappoint me - you can do it! 🙂

Denial and rejection are very common experiences when diagnosed with Diabetes, so you are not alone, and you are not the 'bad diabetic'. D comes with a whole bunch of emotional and psychological upheaval as well as the physical symptoms. Depression and diabetes often go hand in hand.

You cannot change what has been happening over the last years, but you can draw a line under it and move on. Think of the people you love and things you cherish and decide to look after yourself as best you can for them.

Some people call D the 'silent assassin' because you can carry on ignoring it, and the damage is being done unseen in the background. The good news is that any small improvements you make can significantly improve your long term health AND stop you feeling so tired all the time (a symptom of high BGs)

Talk to your clinic. Ask for counselling and support. Get back on your medications and start to feel better.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forums Dee 🙂

You have made a good first step in comming here - well done!

Hi Dee,
I think you need to have a chat with a nurse specialist so you can make a fresh start and get to grips with what needs doing. They are professionals and will have seen lots of people who have had been struggling with the day to day treatment of diabetes like yourself. They also will not judge you for not taking your medication, but will want to support you to make the changes and start to feel better.
I dont know a diabetic who has not had some struggles with it at some point, so you are far from alone!
