Had diabetes for 10 years always thought I was type 1 but it turn out iam type 2 after they done a anti body test just before Christmas because one was never done when I was diagnosed been taking novarapid and levemir now for that time.now they added metformin tablets and ozempic injection aswell as taking my other insulin doses.when I was diagnosed I was 10 and half stone so my weight was perfect for my height.now iam 14 stone does anyone think iam on to much medication getting worried now

Hi @Riddi67 and welcome 🙂 What prompted your antibodies test after all those years? Had you lost weight before you were diagnosed? Did you have a C Peptide test done too?

How are your blood sugars and your diet? Are you on 4 or 5 injections a day? What would an average day’s food be for you?

Sorry if it sounds like the Spanish Inquisition but the more information you can supply the easier it is for people to tailor responses to your personal situation

So you’re not eating a lot then so that doesn’t explain the weight gain. Some LADA cases don’t have antibodies but are still a kind of Type 1 if I remember correctly. Perhaps you could request a C Peptide test too?

I have asked for all my notes from when I was diagnosed, decided to see a private consultant because things are not adding up.never had blood pressure until I started insulin and now iam on two tablets a day.cannot understand why I was not put on metformin and one injection a day with a diet control system and maybe could have come off insulin.hope to get answers soon

Welcome to the forum @Riddi67

It feels like a strange way to reclassify someone who presented clinically as T1 initially. My understanding from hearing the professors and consultants discuss this tooic when on the NICE T1 Guideline Development Group was that antibody tests were not definitive, because it was perfectly possible after some time for a ‘classic’ T1 to test negative once all their beta cells had been kyboshed. No beta cells left - so the antibodies disappear.

In your situation, I believe cPeptide has a better chance (my emphasis):

1.1.5 When measuring C‑peptide and/or diabetes‑specific autoantibody titres, take into account that:
  • autoantibody tests have their lowest false negative rate at the time of diagnosis, and that the false negative rate rises thereafter
  • C-peptide has better discriminative value the longer the test is done after diagnosis
  • with autoantibody testing, carrying out tests for 2 different diabetes‑specific autoantibodies, with at least 1 being positive, reduces the false negative rate.

I would be a little concerned that they have taken you off insulin on the basis of antibody tests after 10 years.

Do you know how your BGs have responded to the changes in medication?

I just had my files i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 3 years later it changed to type 2 never informed of this which has really upset me.seeing a top consultant now to see if I can come off insulin some time in the future
