Hi I’m wondering if I can get some advice for my wife she’s had a few drinks tonight and passed out so I’ve checked her sugars and there at 27+ so I’ve administered her background insulin and 5units of normal insulin so I need to know how long does it take to act before I test her again thanks Arron.

Depends how quickly her faster acting insulin normally takes effect, especially bearing in mind that alcohol itself with no help from anyone, also lowers the BG because you are in GREAT danger of causing the opposite effect.

Please please please ring 999 for an ambulance pdq. Be 100% honest with them. She needs to be safely where someone can watch her like a hawk and constantly check her BG overnight. I know you were only trying to help - but hell - too much insulin can cause brain damage or death.

Sorry to hear about your situation last night. Diabetes, alcohol and insulin can be a tricky and treacherous combination. It is very easy to unintentionally risk severe hypoglycaemia depending on how the alcohol limits glucose output from the liver, and inhibits the body’s ‘emergency measures’ when BG begins to drop

Rapid-acting Analogue Insulin‘s onset is usually something like 15-20 minutes and BG would generally be expected to be falling by the time it reaches ‘full strength’ between 30 minutes and 1 hour after injecting. It will then continue to work at peak until 2 hours, then fade up to 4-5 hours.

Alcoholic drinks can cause BG to rapidly rise initially, but the alcohol will usually lower BG (sometimes dramatically) for up to 24 hours.
