Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Diagnosed one month ago, came as a big shock. Totally confused. Will need help trying to come to terms with this!!!

If you are lucky you can eat a low carb diet and the diabetes will go away. It is often rather a big change if you are used to eating quantities of starch and sugars, but I'd not want to go back to what I was eating at diagnosis - a 'cholesterol lowering' diet which just wasn't working.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Stick around and you'll be an expert on diabetes before long. :D

Hi again

What is it you need help with? With most newly diagnosed it tends to be diet, what to eat and what not to eat. Were you given any dietary advice?

Martin
On a restricted 800 calorie diet, no meds, but I am 8st12 and 5ft 6, so dont need to lose more weight. Sugar levels go from 5.8 up to 12 even when low carbs and watching sugar content. Four more weeks to go on diet and need food to keep my weight on but not upset sugar levels. Very confused. Thanks

Hi @confusedlady , may I ask why you are on such a low calorie diet, 800 seems extreme and like me you obviously don’t need to lose anymore weight. Have you had an HbA1c and do you know the results. We will all do all we can to help

Diabetes nurse suggested 800 calories as she had just come back from a study course? HbA1c was 72 about 4 weeks ago. Waiting to go to Diabeties and Endocrine Department at local hospital as query whether type 1 or 2,but doctor almost certain type 2.

I am not clinical in any way but that seems very low seeing as you don’t need to lose weight - low carbs yes, but ive never heard of that before, that is less than half of what you should have daily normally. I am 5ft 9 and 9st 13, follow low carb and have managed to stabilise my weight but I never even consider how many calories I’m having, only carbs. Most type 2s on here follow a low carb diet. Hopefully someone else will be able to advise you a bit better than me and I’m glad you are being seen at the hospital, I hope it goes well and let us know how you get on.

Welcome
Low carb diet you will also lose weight, which has been my experience. But it does stabilise blood glucose levels along with metformin I have found.

The desmond course recommends half plate of veg or salad, quarter plate protein and quarter carbs, that amount of carbs could help maintain weight but I think it depends how active you are, you may need more carbs if very active alsot be sure to have protein each meal if you are very active. boiled eggs or eggs other, cheese, cold meats, other cooked meats or fish etc.

This sounds like the Newcastle diet,@SueEK, which works by restricting calories to 800 a day for 8 weeks to try and 'reset' the body by losing any visceral fat around the vital organs. (and you can be 'fat on the inside and thin on the outside') It seems to have been a success in about 50% of people who do it. I think it has been suggested that it’s Ok for people to do it who don’t really need to lose any weight, but obviously, you are going to shed some, so keep an eye, and refer to your nurse for advice if you think you’re dropping too much. I hope it works for you.
