My daughter in law is having trouble counting the carbs in home-made food. Mollie is 6 and is a type 1. They will be having beef stew with potatoes, butternut squash, swede, carrots and onions. She wants to know how does she know portion size with several veg???? I don't carb count myself as a Type 2 (yet!) so need help to help them. Thank you.

Hi Supernan, welcome to the forum 🙂 You only need to count the food that contains carbohydrate in any appreciable quantity, so in this case I would say the potatoes. Ideally, you would prepare the stew without the potatoes in it so they could be counted separately for Mollie. I was told that I didn't need to count for the other veg you have named, although you may need to take into account if the stew contains any thickener, such as cornflour. I would say that, if in doubt it is better to under-dose than give too much insulin and make sure everything is recorded so that a similar meal is easier to plan and inject for the next time. 🙂

Hi supernan. Welcome 🙂

Always a difficult one. If she's weighed all the veg beforehand and calculated the total for the stew, then it's really a matter of guesswork, which is a bit scary but the only other option is to separate all the solids from the water and divide the solids up as best she can, then add the water back in.🙂

How long has Molly been diagnosed and what insulin is she on ?

There are carbs in swede and carrot, but as Northerner says I would usually ignore those (unless having an unusually big portion of em!).

Hi

I cook the potatoes separate and carb count those -the stew itself is s bit trial and error but if it's got any pulses in it like peas beans lentils (ours would) I would just guestimate about 10 carbs for my K, which would equate to a couple of units in the evening for her.

With a younger child/smaller portion you may only need to call it 5 carbs (plus the potato which I would always weigh at home )

Good luck x

Help with Mollie's carb counting

Thanks for the help. Mollie was diagnosed at 3 and a half. She was only told last week (well Mum was!) to carb count. I know she is on Lantus Glargine and I am not sure what the short acting is as it is a mix. I have spoken to her Mum and given her the advice on the messageboard and she is very grateful for the help. Rachel had asked for help from her dietician but she hadn't got back to her yet.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

I tend to count 5g CHO for gravy and 15g for thickened stew, plus the obvious carbs eg spuds, dumplings etc. I'd include that 5g/10g upfront. Then when you test later, you can see if it was enough.

I go more for stew, to include anything from the root veg, expecially if it has parsnips, which it usually will have in our house.
