Please could someone tell me if a non-diabetic can have readings of 16.8, 14.7?

My son has all the symptoms and his half brother is Type 1. His readings yesterday were up and down, 16.8 being the highest but today as yet nothing over 6!!

My husband doesn't want me to have his checked cos he thinks there is nothing wrong with him, so I would just like clarification on these kind of readings?

Thank you

Hi Alison, welcome to the forum.

If your son has been getting all the classic symptoms e.g extreme thirst, having to spend a penny frequently, tiredness and BG's up to 16.8 I would definately take him to the doctor to get tested.

I hope for his sake your son doesn't have diabetes, but it's better to find out one way or the other. Rather than ignoring it and hoping it will go away.

Hi Alison, welcome to the forum 🙂 I would agree with Phil, get your doctor to check him out, it's far better to be safe than sorry. Those do sound like high readings, higher than anything I've had since diagnosis, and although non-diabetic people can spike a little after fast-acting sugary foods, I've not heard of it going so high - more like 8's or 9's.

Is there a possibility that the high readings were false ones? For example, might he have had sugary or starchy residue on the tested finger from sweets or crisps? How soon after eating were the tests, and what had he eaten? How old is he? Given your family history, I would have thought that's an additional reason to get him checked. I hope, however, that it is a false alarm - please tell us how you get on 🙂

hi alison welcome to the forum . I do hope you get this sorted as soon as possible x🙂

HI Alison

Welcome to the forum 🙂 x

And Ive been so good about cleaning his hands first, so I doubt there was anything on his fingers, so strange.

Readings today have been 8 at lunchtime and 7.9 at dinner, so not so bad.....think i'll keep checking the first am as thats the one that worried me yesterday

I would take your son to the doctors. There can be other reasons for high levels that arent necessarily diabetes - but it shouldnt be left until things get worse. I hope he doesnt have diabetes - but you need to rule it out and find out why his levels have been high as this is a worry. Do you have ketone test strips? If so - perhaps you could check him for ketones? If he has any ketones - get him to A&E asap. Let us know how it goes.🙂Bev
