KUWAIT: The prevalence of diabetes is alarmingly rising in Kuwait and the region and nearly 40 percent of the people in the country are diabetic, said a renowned Indian diabetologist here yesterday.

Addressing a press conference organized by the Indian Doctors Forum, (IDF) Kuwait yesterday at the Holiday Inn Hotel prior to IDF Oration later in the evening, Padmashri Dr V Mohan, the Chairman and Chief of Diabetology at Dr Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre, Chennai, said diabetes has become a huge problem globally today.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), close to 400 million people across the world (387 million people) have diabetes. This numbers is set to increase close to 600 million by 2030.

"However, these are conservative figures and the real number may be much higher considering the growth of population and the increase in the rate of obesity," Dr Mohan said.
