Pressure to meet NHS targets is adding to a culture of bullying and harassment and leading to “totally unacceptable” levels of abuse, the British Medical Association (BMA) has warned.

Richard Lewis, Welsh Secretary of the BMA, said the health service needed to change its culture to one of zero tolerance after figures revealed nearly one in five NHS staff had experienced harassment, bullying or abuse at work from their manager or other colleagues in the past 12 months.

The Welsh Government’s NHS staff survey also found that 18% had experienced harassment, abuse or bullying from patients and service users in the past year.

Meanwhile, 33% of staff said they had been injured or ill as a result of work related stress.
