I went to Nandos last night before a gig with my friend. I had chicken, chips and "macho peas" (peas with chilli and mint!) I estimated the carb content pretty well with the help of the Carbs and Cals app on my phone!
I don't know why but I had a massive craving for something sweet so decided to have a dessert!! I don't often have desserts and have very rarely had one since diagnosis. I ordered a caramel cheesecake. Before ordering, I realised I had only injected for my main so I quickly went up to the counter and asked if they had nutritional information for their desserts. She looked a bit confused so I quietly explained that I am diabetic and need to inject insulin for my dessert so I need to know the carbohydrate content. She then pulled out a massive book that had every single food item listed and a full breakdown of their nutritional info. She gave me the info, I thanked her and walked away. A few minutes later, Mid injection, she came running over to tell me she'd given me the wrong info. She'd given me the "per 100G" not "per serving" info. I was mid injection so couldn't exactly take the insulin back out. She looked very panicked and was extremely apologetic. She then went to get me a glass of coke just in case I needed it. She didn't charge me for the cheesecake or the coke, as an apology!
As my friend and I were leaving, the manager came over to offer his sincere apologies. I completely understood and can understand how mistakes like that can happen, especially when staff aren't trained in diabetes (and why would they be!). He told me he's going to make sure in future that he makes sure his staff are aware of the book of nutritional info and just how important it is for customers.
Can't take me anywhere without causing a scene, clearly 🙄😛
