My worst ever hypo...

I've just had the worst hypo since I was diagnosed. I was feeling a little low and took a reading - 3.1. So, I ate some jelly babies, but could feel that things were getting really bad - felt like I was going to pass out, really really woozy. I was panicking a bit because the JBs normally do the trick and it was like they'd had no effect and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I took another reading, about five minutes after the first, and it was 2.2. Felt really bad by now - really panicky, so went and knocked on my neighbour's door - thankfully she was in. She made me a cup of sweet tea and that finally seemed to do the trick. Another test about ten minutes later showed me at 6.2.

I've had a couple of bad hypos before, but never one as bad as that where I really felt as though I was going to lose consciousness. I couldn't talk properly when I went to the neighbour's.

I've probably overcompensated, but I'm due for lunch soon so can take a correction. Feel a little bit scared now that I might take too much insulin. Nothing unusual about this morning - normal breakfast, nothing energetic, just WHAM!😱

How horrible :( I hope you're feeling much better now? If you're worried about having another you could just take a little less insulin than you normally would with your lunch - maybe your blood glucose would be slightly raised during the afternoon but sometimes its worth it for the peace of mind if you've just had a nasty fright.

Do you keep coca-cola or lucozade for hypos? Its so easy to drink down quickly and saves you fumbling around with jelly babies if your feeling super woozy!

Luckily I haven't yet had a hypo where I thought I was going to pass out (I think you and I were diagnosed around the same time - are you coming up ti the one-year anniversary too?!) Hope the rest of your day goes well with no more hypos!

graham worst hypo was 1.7 and he did not realised what happen anyway

Oh poor you !!! :( Ive had those , they are the worse hypos ever . How are you feeling now ? it can take ages to start to feel better from ones like that, they scare me because you can still feel yourself getting lower even though you have treated it . do you have a glucogen hypo kit in the house ?? I have just got one to keep in the fridge even though I live alone . I hope you start to feel better soon 🙂.W e all get hypos like from time to time , they are rare so try not to worry yourself too much . Have you tried Lucozade for a hypo ? it tends to hit you system quicker and will help to get you higher sooner , you can get it in all different flavours , my favourite is the lemon as it does not taste sweet like the others . xxx Best wishes Anne-Marie xx

Oh I feel for you Northener. My sons worst was 1.6 and i know he felt fairly distressed at the time. But it scarer for you i think because you had to handle it yourself whereas my son had me right by him, taking the responsibility. Glad you have such a good neighbour and that all was ok in the end.

Hope you ok now. 🙂🙂🙂

Personally, I find some fizzy drink bottles difficult enough to open even when not hypoglycaemic. Plus it would mean wasting half the bottle. A few more jelly babies usually does the trick. The restorative properties of tea... as long as someone else makes it, as it's best to steer clear of kettles and hot water.

Good point about the kettle , what about Glucogel , you can get that on script , ( it used to be called Hypostop) I would also be wary about leaving the house while hypo too . I had a 1.8 the other morning and I dont even know what i ate , I cant remember . I remember waking up , feeling weird , but thats it , i must have sorted it on autopilot , id tested , wrote it down eaten and gone back to bed lol...... scary

Thanks everyone, I'm fine now! This wasn't the lowest I've been - I've been down to 1.9, but then I still felt 'in control', this time I really felt I'd lost it. Mind you, given that it had dropped from 3.1 to 2.2 in five minutes, who knows how low it might have been heading? I thought I would have hugely overcompensated, but I was only 6.3 an hour later, so that was around 35grams of carbs without insulin and it only brought me up to that. Feeling a bit headachy now, but I've had my lunch. The only thing I can think is that it was about 3 hours after my breakfast and maybe the absorption of the insulin had been a bit uneven and hit me then after my breakfast had digested. I did have quite an active day yesterday helping my other neighbour to move house, so maybe that was a factor. The symptoms were different from most other hypos I've had - no sweating or heart racing, and I think I only started shaking because of the panic.

I do have some lucozade in the fridge, which has been there for about 10 months I think! Don't really like fizzy pop, but I bought it when it was on offer as a standby. I might open one of the bottles (good point Copepod!) and let it go flat, might make it easier to drink.

Lula - I just passed my anniversary about three weeks ago, when's yours? I went to a beer festival to celebrate!🙂

I could hardly walk, so wouldn't have been able to attempt tea myself! I do have some of that glucogel, not sure where it is - no glucagon kit though, again, I don't think I would have been able to use that on myself the state I was in. The JBs usually do the trick straight away, but didn't seem to have any effect and I wasn't thinking rationally enough to consider alternatives. If I feel it going so quickly again though, I will go for the lucozade.

I'm glad you are feeling better again now Northerner 🙂🙂 Do you live alone ? I do apart from my dog so I tend to have stuff all over the house , even in the bathroom in case of fast drops that catch me unaware. Try and rest up today as hypos like that can take it out of you . I t sounds like it may be down to the house move , just delayed hitting your system. Glad you are ok though !!!!!:D

Sorry to hear you had a bad one northerner, I hope you feel better now. Were you gobbling down jelly babies whilst your neighbour made the tea? I wouldnt be able to wait hehe. I'd be impresses if you didnt rebound high at lunch, I always over eat when I have a hypo!

I had a hypo last night and ruined my day of good numbers, woke up to 13! grr.

believe it or not I was replying before you came back, but i kept getting distracted, so now my post looks random :D

no matter how bad I feel I seem to go on autopilot for food, any food I can get my hands on (if i feel really bad) so that is good I guess, you need to train your hypo mind to aim for sugar :D

hehehehehehehehehe im the same katie. i feel it coming and my brain goes "ok wheres the bloody sugar at now!!!" and it sends my body straight to the fridge lol.

i think it takes a few hypo's tho for your body to start to be able to do this.

i have a mate who seems to only have fast drop hypo's!!!!! he has superb control and only hypo's at most once a month but when he does he just drops like a stone. yeah it is very very scary!!!!

Hi Northerner,

Just checked in. Sorry to hear of your bad hypo, but glad to read you are now feeling OK.

I know what you mean about the Lucozade, makes me feel sick, but works very quickly. I drink mine flat too which is bareable, but I do that becuase once in a very low hypo I couldnt open the bottle top becuase I had done it up too tight! Massive panic alert!

Hope you are feeling ok now and take it easy!
Lou

Hi Northerner,

Sorry to hear you've had a bad hypo....glad you feeling better now:D....good on your neighbour for helping quickly..
Honey is a good substitute if Glucogel..'Hypostop', not available or even icing sugar.
Nathan's worse hypo...was 1.1...It was horrendous...Ambulance was called, because he had started to pin wheel..so it was very difficult for me to help, and get anything in to him...because I am on my own with him.

Heidi
🙂
