Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All

I am writing this for the past me.... what I mean is I'm writing the post I would have wanted to read when I found out I had type 2 diabetes.

So it was April and an unrelated hospital visit picked up blood sugars of 15 mmol, they did my HB1a which came back as over 80. At that point I was 107kg and ate a lot of chocolate. I'm 34 years old, I had ate poorly for years and despite warnings from family of dying young I carried on, always reminding them that it may knock 10 years off my life but it did knock it off the **** end.... Any how, suddenly being pigeon holed was a wake up call....

3 months on and I have reversed my diabetes, my HB1a is now 29 (inside the normal range). I will always be high risk of getting diabetes but its under my control.

So.... how did i do it, it's simple but hard, I embarked (and will continue on) a program of getting fit and eating better.

Getting fit, 107kg to 83kg in 12 weeks.
- I brought an Apple Watch (a fitbit or cheaper equiv will do)
- I brought a treadmill (outside path will do)
- I track my exercise on an app (my fitness pal)

I do 30 mins a day on the tread mill (45 if I've been on my arse all day at work) used Apple watch to keep heart rate over 140bpm to start with this was 5kph, now its 9kph. At the start I had very high blood pressure, now its 172/22. The Apple watch is a great motivator, I want to fill those rings every day. I also use the stairs, never the escalator, I park further away from the shops.

Eating Well
- downloaded my fitness pal
- plan food diary

This was a particular struggle for me as I have a food phobia (seeing a shrink....) but even with my limited pallet monitoring what I ate on my fitness pal, keeping under 1200 calories and keeping to a ratio of 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fat has done the trick. I have treat days - 1 per week. I eat what I want but stay in the limits. I now take more interest in how many Carbs, fat and sugar are in foods.

Huel (google it) has really helped me, I have a Huel shake for lunch, fills me up until dinner.

To start with it was hard (I was seriously blowing out my arse on that treadmill), now its just my routine, if you are me 3 months ago in 3 months time you can be where I am now, I dare say it will be this easy for everyone but you can take control and reverse it. I wrote this as I wish I could have read this 3 months ago, when the nurse was explaining what my HB1a result meant.

I am keeping up my routine, I know where the path leads if I stop and I have no intention of going down that path again.

if you're me 3 months ago reading this then trust me, a few lifestyle changes make a very tangible difference, there are also a few bonuses I haven't mentioned, I now look good (still a bit more weight to lose) everyone says how great I look, My stamina has improved massively (in the bedroom too if you get the drift....) I have so much more energy, I seem to have invented extra time in my life because I have so much energy to do things.

Cheers

Neil
