I went to my doctors early January 2020 with a slight pain in my lower back
The doctor done tests on my urine to check for an infection and then he spotted that my glucose was very high. he sent me for a blood test and the day after I done my blood test the doctor called me on the phone and informed me that I may have type 2 diabetes. I went for a 2nd blood test and I went to visit my doctor again and he confirmed my count was at 82 and he told me i had type 2 diabetes he then advised me what not to eat and good things to eat he also gave me a prescription for Metformin And a lot of other advice. He told me NO Suger and my first question was "is it ok if i only have 2 sugers in my tea" needless to say his answer was 'no'. I was very concerned that by me not taking suger in the future would make me feel weak and not having too much energy and my doctor told me "your brain is fooling you into thinking you need suger and within 2 weeks of you giving up suger you will get an energy".
I dropped the prescription into my chemist and when I came back to collect I was shocked to see a Tesco bag full of tablets
That night I never slept I watched videos of different professors from all around the world giving advice on diabetes. I was very confused as i knew very little about this. After watching about 12 hours of different seminars i seemed to warm to one professor. everything he said seemed to make sense it also seemed simple. My mind was made up and i needed a lifestyle change. I put the Tablets away. and i then went into my kitchen and i emptied out all my cupboards and fridge freezer of all the bad types of food . I then went to Asda and i was about 3 hours in there due to my new knowledge making me look at every label and working out what I am allowed to have and introduce good food into my diet. I am 62 i have never spent that long in a shop ever. I now had lots of good food in my kitchen. I was ready to give this my best shot. It started off with me replacing a fry up for breakfast with strawberries and ???? Nuts with yogurt which i really enjoyed. I also introduced steaks salmon turkey and smoked haddock into my selection of dinners. I have small portion of mash potato. Green beans/cabbage. I have a choc ice 2 to 3 times a week 2 squares of 90% chocolate 3 to 4 times a week. And few other 'small' treats Pre Jan i used to have indian 3 ish times a week and a fry up most days One big thing happened on the ninth day after my good food program i woke up and that energy that my doctor told me i would get within 2 weeks had arrived and i was feeling great and on top of the world.
I was due to have my 3 month follow up blood test at the start of April but due to corona virus i put this off.
In June I went and got blood test done. At this stage i had lost almost 2 stone. The day after i got test my doctor rang me and after asking me few questions about my lifestyle change she said "ah that explains it your blood is now at 39 A1C. I was totally shocked and excited and very emotional at this news considering 5 months prev i was 82 A1C Two weeks later i went for follow up blood test and that came back at 37 A1C
Looking back over the past 8months all my success is put down to me cutting down on my carbs and my portions and giving up sugar. Due to corona i have failed in getting long walks and been more active.
My next A1C blood test is due later this month
