Hi all
Well my partner is type 1 diabetic so I thought I was pretty knowledgeable but last week my 9 yr old son was diagnosed and I feel like as I have started right from the start!
He is on 4 injections a day and is brilliant at injecting himself and monitoring his bloods, but it is me struggling to come to terms with it.
I am looking forward to the information and advice I can get from here.

Thanks

Hi NI-Bookworm, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis, but good to hear he is so accepting and capable already. I wolu suggest having a read of Adrienne's essential guide for parents of newly diagnosed children, which you may find helpful. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas if you don't already have one in the house, it's an excellent reference and guide to all things Type 1, suitable fr all ages, but with a particular emphasis on younger T1s.

Please let us know if there is anything we can help with and we will try our best to help. 🙂

Thanks so much.

I have been trying to order to order a copy of the dr hanas book but it is out of stock in many places. Had a look through some of the chapters on amazon and I can see why it is recommended.

My son is being treated in a different health trust than my husband and the difference in the level of care is unbelievable. We have got so much information and had never heard about pumps or carb counting.

So it will be a learning time for all!!
🙂

Welcome to the forum and best of luck, the book as you say, is really worth getting. 🙂

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry your son has to deal with diabetes at all but it sounds like he has a good team and a dedicated Mum so he'll be just fine 🙂

Sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis, and only natural that you are feeling like you are - it's turned your lives upside down and you are going through a kind of grieving process. Glad to hear you've got a good clinic team (some of them are not so good, but often the paediatric teams are more proactive). If you are on Facebook, there are some good groups of parents of children with type 1, where you can ask any questions and share tips - I recommend the Children With Diabetes group (CWD UK - Main Group). Welcome to the forum 🙂

Hi welcome to this forum, it is an invaluable site. Bless your boy its not easy but he is doing so well and you will get through this. Xx

Welcome NI Bookworm good luck with getting book & care of your son 🙂

Hi Bookworm and welcome.🙂 Sorry to hear about your lad's diagnosis. 😱 Good luck getting to grips with everything. 🙂

Welcome to the forum! I too thought I knew all about diabetes because my mum has been T1 since before I was born - but when my daughter was diagnosed it quickly became obvious that it's a whole different kettle of fish when you actually have to manage it yourself! It is a shock at first, and you do have to go through a grieving process, but things do get easier. This forum is great too - whatever questions you have, there is always someone who knows the answer!
