Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i have had diabetics type 2 for three years
And always been so good with my diet i was on Metformin 500mg once a day .5 weeks ago I started feeling unwell to cut the story short I ended up at A&E with my sugers at 29 where they gave me insulin and put a salt water drip in. since then my doctor has put my metformin up to 1000mg twice a day my sugers are still between 12 and 18 . I can't seem to get them any lower . I now have a upset stomach most of the time . Which I am assuming is the pills . I read on here about peoples nurses being so good I only see mine once a year and when I called to ask for a appointment I was told end of next week . Sometimes I think living with diabetic is a lonely life ..

Hi Linda and welcome.

I wonder if perhaps you are actually Type 1 or LADA. When you were admitted to hospital and given insulin, did they not discuss treatment options with you for when you were released. It seems strange to me that they would give you insulin and then release your without a treatment plan or at least back up appointments to reassess your current treatment.
Yes the upset stomach will likely me the increased \Metformin. Make sure to take them with a substantial meal.
Did you explain that you have already been admitted to hospital recently with dangerously high BG readings and that they are still high. Do you have Keto strips to test your urine? With levels that high you should have. If you are not getting support from your nurse, go back to hospital.

Hi i have a appointment with nurses on the 29th of this month they did give me keto strips . They didn't keep me in hospital as the insulin got but sugers down to 18 . They said to keep a eye on it and go back to hospital if it went up again before I could get to my doctor . I have to say that I have never been impressed with the treatment from my surgery

Hello @Linda Kitney from another Linda but been called lin all my life.
Welcome to the forum. Tbh I am not impressed with your surgery either, is their any chance of changing to another practice, if so it is easy to swap.

I used to have to see my nurse every three months and have blood tests before each review , plus the usual yearly feet and eye checks .now I see her twice a year .

Do keep an eye on those ketones.

Their is a slow release version of Metformin that some people tolerate better.

What dietary regimen are you following .

These are the 15 health checks we are supposed to have ,some may not be applicable for you

Hi i started seeing my nurse every 3 months for the first year . Then I moved and now with a different surgery my suger was really good so they said I only need yearly appointment . They do most of the 15 checks yearly . A lot of those get done anyway as I have other health problems . I don't eat sweet things never have . Carbs are my problem and hidden sugers I'm being very good at the moment . Not that it seems to be making much difference . I am thinking about changing surgery but how do I know which one to go for

Yes it is carbs that we need to watch.
Your levels going so high is why @rebrascora mentioned. LADA (latent autoimmune diabetes in adults it’s like a slow onset T1. in my experience people with T2 don’t normally go as high as your levels did and with LADA fmeds for T2 work then gradually stop working and insulin is needed.

Though it may just be the Metformin were not sufficient and as you have other heath problems they may affect your diabetes control too.

You could try asking friends and neighbors about their Gp practice , I am not sure if their are any reviews online about Gp practices, you could try googling, or someone on here may know.
