Hi everyone, Well my holiday to Vegas was interesting.

Firstly travelling with US airways, i made some sandwiches and took 2 bananas with me as i didnt know what the food situation was on the first flight and i knew that they didn't provide food on the 2nd 5 hour flight. anyway all was well until i went through customs in Philadelphia and they took my sandwich and banana off me!! so much for forward planning, there was nowhere in the airport to buy a wholemeal sandwich so i had a hot steak sandwich and didn't have anything on the 2nd flight..

Food in my hotel was great with lots of good options.. VERY clued up for diabetes, they had a whole section of sugar free/no added suger cakes.. I don't like cakes but was very impressed.

Did lots of walking so bloods were more or less ok, just high in the evenings.

Went to the crand canyon, at the little airport i asked for a diet coke, My husband said that he thought she had poured regular coke so i asked her to confirm that it was diet as i was diabetic.. she said that she was pretty sure.. I pointed out that the regular coke tap was dripping.. she tasted it and said " oh yes, it is regular, i should watch for that with diabetics"!!!! i don't think that it would have been that bad for me but i'm sure it could have made another person very ill indeed.. couldn't believe it.. in future i will only order diet coke if i can see the machine.

On the flight back to the uk they only had pastries, having not eaten for 12 hours (flight delayed) i asked if there was anything inside the pasrty, the attendant said, oh i don't know, cheese or apple! unbelievable, anyway luckily i had bought a grilled chicken mcdonalds and so have something to eat.

Anyway all in all Fab holiday, now i am starting to monitor foods, bloods last night were 14.8, highest yet (only monitoring for 3 weeks) 8.2 this morning and 12.2 after wholemeal toast.. is that ok? called nurse she said it was the heat and im probably dehydrated. I don't know what is high really or how to bring it down.

Hi Julie
At some US airports, if you don't declare food to the department of agriculture you can be fined, imprisoned or deported!
The immigration folk advised me of this as I used to take loads of British grub to my son and his tribe.
Sounds as if you were dehydrated which sure does have an effect on your bg level. Takes a couple of days to rehydrate fully and a good sign is good clear pee.

Julie

Glad you enjoyed your holiday and mostly found reasonable options

In terms of your readings this morning then I'm assuming your reading was 2 hours post meal? I find that I am most insulin resistant first thing in the morning and can only manage to keep my blood glucose to the recommended 8.5mmol maximum by keeping to less than 35g total carbohydrates AND doing some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes about 1 hour after my breakfast. Exercise such as walking or energetic housework is usually guaranteed to bring my blood glucose down

Heat and dehydration does strange things to our readings too - the other thing can be that you are brewing a cold or similar as often can get higher readings in advance of any symptoms

Dear Julie,

Looks like you had a great time, and you managed to steer a path though the carbohydrate laden American food industry. Good observation regarding the Coke thing I've had the same thing happen to me in the USA. You say that you were 12.2mmol/L after wholemeal toast - how long after? All digestable carbohydrates are converted to glucose (blood sugar) before entering your blood stream so you may need to watch your carbohydrate intake more carefully. Are you on any medications?

hi, the test was done 2 hours after breakfast, between which i had unloaded a transit van ( i do that every day!)

Am really struggling to find out what to eat, nurse said no carbs but that is not a reality as there are carbs in everything, i just had ham for lunch!.

Anyway think you are all right, totally dehydrated... will drink lots today.

Not on any medication.

Dear Julie,

I am not allowed to give you dietary or medical advice (your DSN was spot-on) so I will tell you what my blood sugar was 1 hour after lunch - 6.9mmol/L. I expect it to drop to below 6mmol/L in another hour. That was after a low carbohydrate meal consisting of Lamb shank, cauliflour, cabbage, broccoli, peas and carrots (easy on the peas and carrots). So you see, the only thing "different" about my meal is that there were no potatoes. Now, I know we are all different - so what works for me may not work for you, so I ask you to read a book on the ways you can keep your blood sugars in check - in fact very close to normal. The book I am talking about is listed in the books thread, it is "Blood Sugar 101 - What They Don't Tell You About Diabetes" by Jenny Ruhl. There are others but I found this to be good.
