I experienced my first hypo yesterday. I had been but on 2 x 9 units of insulatard at the beginning of the week and my readings had been good. Average at about 6.6 on waking in the morning and the dropping to about 4.5 before lunch and dinner.

I went for acupuncture the night before and then yesterday took a reading before breakfast which was 5.5. I ate the same breakfast I had all week but by 1130 I started to feel muzzy headed and then a little jittery. Took my Gloucouse and it was at 3.2

I feel a little bit reassured that I know know what to expect and taking the Gloucouse tablet seemed to resolve it but it took a good ten min to make me feel better.

I have gone back to taking 8 units in the morning or at least unit they but me on MDI.

Regarding sugars, do people find that coke make recovery quicker or anything else?

Hi Andrew, sorry to hear about the hypo, but it is good to get that first one out of the way as you now have a much better idea of what to expect and what your particular symptoms are - it looks like you recognised it well and dealt with it well too 🙂

I don't use Coke myself to treat hypos, but I have heard people say that a fizzy, sugary drink does raise levels faster than glucose tablets, sweets etc. so worth a try next time. Hope you can get onto MDI very soon so you have much better control and flexibility 🙂

Hi Andy

I agree too, getting that first one out of the way is a milestone, at least now you know what to expect and how to react. The big thing is not to ignore the symptoms EVER. It won't go away, it will only get worse, so the sooner you treat it the quicker you will feel better.

My son used to use Coke and found it worked well, you can buy small 150ml cans in all the big supermarkets, that's the recommended amount to take for a hypo. Occasionally if he had a really low one he felt he needed a second can but not normally. Lucozade is fine too, but 150ml, not a whole 500ml bottle!

On the glucose tablet front, how many did you take? 3 is the recommended amount. I wasn't sure whether to read into it that you took just one? It really is personal preference. My son used to use Coke all the time, the only reason he stopped was that he said it was too tempting to him to want to drink all the time, so moved to the glucose tablets.

Well done dealing with it, you at least now know what to expect.

yep deffo good to know and be able to recognise the warning signs.... my treatment of choice is a few jelly babies 🙂 it does take about ten mins to get into the system before feeling better, i find gluco tabs can be very dry and hard to eat esp when feeling rubbish

I know this sounds stupid but I'm actually jealous!

Can't seem to get my readings down to single digits for more than a day or two let alone get close to a low! One one hand I'm thinking great no hypos, but on the other I'm thinking I'm still way to high. I'm nervous about that first hypo but it's the not knowing exactly how I'll feel and if I'll know it's happening that I'm nervous about, sounds like you recognised it really well, I hope when my day comes I'll know it too.

Wrong LOL

Just 100ml of Lucozade is 15g of CHO (well it's 17.2 g to be precise) but 150 ml of Coke is 15g CHO.

Depends which you prefer drinking, but there again, there is actually MORE actual glucose in Lucozade than Coke, and as you start to absorb it through the inside of your cheeks, I find Lucozade hits the spot quicker than Coke. And I really really like the taste of the orange flavoured one - but it doesn't come pre-measured like the Coke ....

thats not stupid ...as a type 2 depending on your meds you are unlikely to get levels to experience this sort of hypo ...however you will still get similar symptoms as you body gets used to lower levels ..keep working at it 🙂

Andrew re your thread from what i understand from being part of this forum is that one positive thing is that you have hypo awareness and im sure the good folk of this forum will give you guides as to the best method to treat it 🙂
