Thought it might be helpful to others to know the time taken for new notifications to DVLA

1 October: Downloaded form from internet and posted it first class.

19 October: Received response notifying me of decision to grant 3 year license. Had to send old license plus photo to get this. Told that if I didn't then license would be revoked from 16 November. MAKE A NOTE OF THE REFERENCE NUMBER ON THE MEDICAL LETTER AS IT IS NEEDED TO CHECK ON THE PROGRESS OF YOUR APPLICATION.

22 October: sent photo and old license first class.

17 November: Rang them to query when it would come and told it was posted second class on 15 November. No problem in driving as the database shows I have a current 3 year license even if I have not received it.

I thought this was quite a reasonable timescale - just over 6 weeks from me posting initial form to them posting new license back.

Thanks for the update. As you say, sounds reasonable timescale. In all cases, people can continue to drive on original licence.

Next step is to inform your car insurance company, if you haven't done so already. They may "adjust" (euphamism for "increase") your premium, but in many cases, it won't affect price.

Already notified insurers - nothing extra at least for this year. Also postman has just this minute delivered my new license.

I'll live in hope that they have got back to their former prompt timetable then !

That's very nice to hear, so thank you.

Hi Pippa,
insurers as far as I know are not allowed to increase your premium due to diabetes.
I only pay ?157/ year for full comp.
