Type 2
Hi, I was newly diagnosed this week as Type 2 and sent off with no white carbs advice and some metformin. The raging thirst, endless peeing, blurred vision and revolting dry mouth gave some clues, but just a year ago a blood test showed I wasn't even in the prediabetes range in a blood test! Things change fast. Turns out I have a significant vitamin D deficiency which on reading up appears to trigger type 2 diabetes in some people. I'm taking control, using receipes on here, losing weight and sorting out eye and foot care. I just really wanted to say how much I admire all diabetics and always have done (medical background) because it really is one of the hardest ongoing diseases to manage and takes real mental positivity to cope. I've always dreaded getting it, but now I have I want to take inspiration from all the people who already have it and just say I admire each and every one of you and hope I can have the willpower and strength of character that you all do to sort things out.

Well done on your positive attitude. It's a scary diagnosis at first, I thought my life would change forever and it has, but for the better. I've never felt so well. It sounds like your trigger was very different from mine. I have to admit I had no deficiency of anything except will power! Keep up your good work 🙂
 
Hi and welcome from me too.

I'm another one who is now fitter and healthier and slimmer as a result of my diagnosis and feel that I will probably live longer and with a better quality of life as a result of my diagnosis, because it was the kick up the pants I needed to make some changes.. Yes it has taken some getting my head around a dietary change, but I really needed to. What has amazed me is how reducing my carb intake and eating more fat has stopped the cravings for those "high carb foods" and I have now found other foods which I enjoy instead of sweets and chocolate, which don't cause me Blood Glucose (BG) disruption .... although I do still have the odd square of dark 70%+ chocolate which I usually have with a spoon of peanut butter to take the bitterness off it a bit and make it more satisfying. Nice cheeses and olives are my new chocolate.
There are some people on the forum who bake low carb cakes and biscuits and breads, but generally I just avoid those things altogether and surprisingly it isn't difficult anymore even when others are eating them in front of me.

Anyway, just wanted to say that there is hope because if sugar addicts and carb monsters like me can make the necessary changes and sustain it and still enjoy my food, then I am sure you can because you sound motivated and determined. Once you have cracked the first 3 months it gets easier. I experiment with different foods (particularly veg) more now because I need to and my tastes have really changed. Interestingly I now feel that I taste in "colour" whereas before, because of my sugar and carb intake I was eating in "black and white", so I now enjoy and appreciate bitterness and sourness and savoury much more than I did before.

Will be having rib eye steak with celeriac chips and salad with cheese coleslaw tonight.... hard to feel badly done to 🙄 but that is a good low carb meal. Might push the boat out and have some strawberries and clotted cream for afters or some cheese and olives with a glass of red before bed instead of dessert. It's a hard life.... now... if only I had a personal chef!

Hope you find the forum a helpful soundingboard, and a safe place to vent and let off steam whenever you need to.

Can you remember your HbA1c result? And have you been started on any medication, or are you starting with diet and exercise to begin with?

members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.

You might also like to register with the Learning Zone (orange tab in the main menu), which is packed with informative modules you can work through 🙂
 
Well - there's 16g carb in one Tesco all butter one, so if you cut it in half lengthwise and used it instead of two large slices of bread to make a sandwich for lunch - which would suit me 100% cos I'm just not all that mega keen on boring bread - that would be at least half of the carb value of the bread (anything from 30g to 42g depending on whether thin, medium or thick slices.)
