I just thought I would share my story just to highlight the importance of looking after yourself.
It was Nov 2017 and during a cold snap, last thing I remember was feeling sick and rushing to the bathroom to throw up. Two days later my friend after receiving no reply to messages decided to check on me as I lived alone in a small village. She said when she found me I looked dead. I was naked lying on my front room floor , I had wet and soiled myself and was covered in sick, the paramedics were fast to respond with a car and then full ambulance, they were really worried I would die before reaching hospital as I was so cold and told my friend to expect the worse when she got to A&E.
Having rushed me to resus they used to special bair hugger blankets to warm me up, I was fully comatose during this so remember nothing, they did some scans including a brain scan and discovered a bleed so was rushed from Tauntons Musgrove park hospital to Bristols Southmead hospital and had a burr hole and drain tube.
I was asleep for 8 days and when I woke I was in a side room in ICU but because of confusion and having the glucose and insulin drips along with blood and fluid I honestly thought I had been abducted by aliens, seems strange I know but I really thought that, the room having no windows didn't help.
A really strange thing were people were coming to see me and I had no idea who anyone was which was a tough few days for my family and it took a few days to start to recognise people.
On day 14 they moved me to a ward where I found out about the bleed, I also had a really bad chest infection and they also found a clot on my heart. The doctor asked if she could write this for the British Medical Journal as fighting all these things at once was quite a lot and my story did get published.
I spent 51 days in total in hospital and went in at 95 kilos and came out at 55 kilos, mostly due to finding out that I needed creon , they even asked my permission to do an HIV Test as my weight loss was so excessive.
After leaving hospital it took me the best part of a year to get back to about 90% of me and it has had a few long term affects..one is my handwriting which went back to childlike and still isn't good and I struggle a bit with spelling and grammar but try not to let it affect me too much.
I look after myself so much better these days as I was very lazy pre this, so thought I would share this just in case my story may give someone else the little kick up the bum we sometimes need.
Sorry if it was too long a story.
Adam.
