Hi All, bit of a newbie on here but I read with interest a post by Margie about 'Stiffness when walking' and a subsequent post by Phil65 (I think) saying that he got his simvastatin swapped to atorvastatin and it helped him.

What's the story with this? - since I was started on simvastatin I've had endless aches and pains all over and I take paracetamol and voltarol (diclofenac) practically every day just to be comfortable.

Nothing like as bad as some people obviously but I'll ask to change over too if it might ease me up a bit. Any thoughts anyone?

Cheers everyone - great forum.

Muscle and joint pain can be a side-effect of simvastatin, so it's certainly worth asking your GP if you can try a different type. Depending on your situation, you might ask if you can stop taking them for a couple of weeks to see if the pain goes, then you can be pretty sure it is down to the simvastatin. I think they try them first because they are the cheapest, and if you don;t get side-effects all well and good, but if you do then you can try a different one 🙂

Let us know what the doctor says - always useful for other members to know 🙂

Thanks Northerner, I've got a med review coming up in a month so I think I'll ask about swapping, don't really want to stop taking statins as they have done wonders for the old cholesterol level. I'll let you know what happens.

I would be tempted to make an appointment now, rather than waiting a month. If it is due to the simvastatin, no need to endure it for longer than necessary! 🙂

I'd also suggest making an appointment sooner than a month away. Keep taking your simavastatin until you get advice / new statin via GP & pharmacist. Taking (near) daily doses of paracetamol and diclofenac isn't a good situation, especially if there's another solution to your aches & pains. Plus, you're probably finding it more difficult to be as active as you'd like due to aches & pains, and any GP should want to promote your physical activity.

Agree, I'll make an appointment soon. Voltarol is great for the joints but not good for the stomach so I'm also taking ranitidine to keep the acid down.

Half-blind, arthritic, diabetic and bilious but apart from that I'm fine :D.

Cheers guys.
