So today admittedly I had a bit of a bad day but the takeaway food I ordered which was a chicken and mushroom dish doesn't ever spike my BG has no sugar etc. Elsewhere I had some strawberries, those don't really spike me. I did eat a lot of Guliyan no added sugar chocolate but again, that isn't seemingly spiking my BG.

BUT I did scoff six of those wafers: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gullon-Sugar-Vanilla-Flavour-Biscuits/dp/B00S16CG70

It's been about an hour and a bit since I ate them and my BG is 10.9!!!!???? Is this due to the biscuits? It seems so.

But I'd been making so much progress getting my HBA1C to 37/38 and I thought maybe this meant I would be on the way to remission. Truth be told since I got back to normal HBA1C I have been eating more berries like strawberries and lot of them as well as binging on those Guliyan chocolates. I fear I'm losing my discipline and hence why despite losing a lot of weight but needing to still lose more, it's staying static. What can I do to go down further?

Should I be worried? 10.9 is way too high for a spike though no even for a normal non-diabetic?

I have very high blood glucose levels with any kind of biscuits so I'm trying to stay away from them as much as possible

If those foods don’t spike you when eaten seperately, it may be that they do in combination. There’s 33g carb in the wafers, not sure how much chocolate you had but that could be another 30g, not much in strawberries but takeaway food could contain hidden sugar/carbs too.

You seem to rely a lot on sugar free foods, but sugar free doesn’t mean it won’t affect your bg. Sometimes a smaller amount of the real thing can be more satisfying.

Hi @Purple_Panda six of those wafers are 33g carb plus whatever carbs are in the so called sugar free chocolates, so really it’s unsurprising that your BG has spiked.

You do have to remember that even if you get your levels into the non diabetic range your body will always have a struggle to cope with carbohydrates and to maintain those levels you can't risk regularly bombarding your system with high carb foods especially all at once, most people have worked hard to get levels down but need to continue to watch those carbs. As said the sugar free products are not necessarily low carb and are probably full of other forms of sweeteners which could be the thing causing the high blood glucose levels.
If you are static then maybe going back to basics for a few days and do a food diary as it might reveal where things have slipped and you are actually having more carbs than you think.

On your recent thread you asked:

Should I just give up on these no added sugar wafers and biscuits? Indeed, helping myself to spoonfulls of nutella substitute even with no added sugar clearly isn't helping the BG levels?”

I answered Yes, you should. I think they’re addictive and I think they’re causing you stress. There are no real ‘cheats’ out there, and removing one kind of food from your diet and replacing it with ‘fake food’ isn’t the answer IMO.

10.9 is high but not awfully high. But the stress caused by all these sugar-free foods really doesn’t seem worth it. I think you’d feel a lot better if you dumped them personally.

10.9 is way too high for a spike though no even for a normal non-diabetic?

No, that is quite conceivable for a normal non-diabetic person. But 10.9 an hour after eating means nothing without knowing what it was before eating, and somewhat less meaningful compared to two hours after.

I ought to add about 2 hours after eating or so my BG was down to 6.3.

10.9 for a random test just shows what the peak was.
The 2 hour 6.3 is the result you are looking for.

However, they aren't something I would eat normally.

Well I've dumped those wafers. The Gullon brand biscuits really aren't any good. Honestly I would much recommend the Guliyan chocolate and the Diablo wafers as those didn't really spike much above 7 if at all.

Sadly, sugar free doesn't mean carb free and carbs will spike your BS levels just the same.

Everyone has times when they go off track but it's how you recover that matters. Having one or two may not have had such an impact so maybe think about moderating treats like these.
