Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, new member here. I’m 23 and I’ve had diabetes type 1 since I was 4 years old.

I work in a daycare and one of the kids has mumps and I was just wondering does anybody know how that might affect a type 1?

I’ve caught so much in there already and I’m very aware of being in dka again.

Thanks

Have you had any mumps vaccines (MMR most likely given your age)?

If you have then you are unlikely to catch mumps, two doses of MMR provides protection for 95% of people.

Welcome @Oliviag23 🙂 You should have had the MMR and that should give you protection. Occasionally the protection wears off in adulthood. You can have tests to check whether it has. I think. If so, you might be able to get a further immunisation if needed, but that would be something to speak to your GP about. Obviously that wouldnt help now but it might help in future.
