My Mum visited her gp today about her BG (she has been monitoring it for past week) and showed him the readings - highest 14.1 but several above 8 - and he said that he thinks it is nothing to worry about and just carry on eating as she normally would! He said that everyone's BG fluctuates like that! She told him she has been passing urine a lot more, has a dry mouth and is thirsty a lot, especially at night, but he still maintains nothing to worry about. She is having a fasting glucose done on Tuesday but this will probably show nothing as her levels always return to normal. What do you all think? Do you think she is Type 2?

Hmmm...obviously I'm not a doctor, but I would have thought that levels like those would indicate a glucose intolerance at the very least. The whole point of why we, as diabetics, are told to try and keep our levels no higher than 8.5 after meals is because above this is not 'normal' - so to me that means that your Mum's readings are not normal!

Perhaps an OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) would be more appropriate if her fasting levels are usually in range?

It would be interesting to see what the HbA1c reads - maybe she should ask her GP to do one of those too.

I'd look at changing GP too - there is plenty of evidence that non-diabetics don't go above 8 let alone 14. If they think that's normal and perfectly ok...

Hi

If I've learnt anything these last two years it's that Doctors can be wrong!

If your Mum isn't happy with those levels (and I wouldn't be if K had them and she's 'officially' diabetic🙄) then IMHO she needs to keep pestering her GP or change GP if necessary.

Also if it were me I would be looking into my diet (using advice on here:D) to try and bring those numbers down if possible.

Almost 20 years ago my doctor told me that I didn't have IBS as there was 'no such thing' - bet he's embarrassed now ( or stopped practicing - wouldn't know - changed doc's) Almost 4 years ago I was told K's extreme weight loss was 'just her age' - unfortunately I believed that doctor:(

Hope your Mum can get this sorted soon Xx

A venous plasma bg test over 11.1 is sufficient for a dx of Type 2 Diabetes IF confirmed by a second random test over 11.1.

But why concentrate on Type 2 ? Parents of T1 children are at increased risk of being dxed with T1/LADA themselves.

She should probably ask for the works - OGTT to look for T2 and if positive GAD and C-peptide tests to look for T1 or LADA.

Perhaps you could test her yourself to see
if she turns up with another random bg over 11.1

I have had similar problems with our GP Newbs, with very similar numbers to your mum.
He (my Doctor) even suggested I join the local gym to help keep my numbers lower than 10+ after meals.
At 8 stone I really don't need to be burning off extra cals through more exercise.

Maybe your mum could get an appointment/speak with a dsn at the surgery. That's where I went in the end. We tagged it on to the end of one of Rob's appointments 😱

I'm basically diet controlled now. And am very weary of going to the Drs for help 😡

Sarah 🙂

Thanks everyone. Printed your replies off to show my mum and today she phoned the surgery with the view to changing gp. They said it is difficult and she would have to make appt to tell gp why she doesn't like him(!), make appt with new gp of choice and then the 2 gps will sit down and decide if ok! Doesn't right to me. We are thinking of changing surgeries.

Anyway, great suggestions by you all as usual, hadn't personally thought of her having an oral glucose test and that would be much more useful so we are planning to ask if she can have that done. She went back to eating normally and has had several in the 10s and 11s now so am going to get hold of my DSN and ask her advice too.

She had the c-peptide test done several years ago as they thought I was MODY but ruled it out as both my parents came back as negative.

My surgery has several GPs but there is no problem in requesting to see a different one - certainly not something they should need to debate I think as you shouldn't need to give a reason! 🙂
