Hi All,
We joined the diabetic world or should I say our eldest son joined! At the beginning of Jan. Rollercoaster ride of being referred by the optician - son wasn't poorly at all so all very strange getting a diagnosis. He is on injections and carb counted from day 3 I think it was. Back to school within days! He's amazing. Currently thinking about going on to have the libre. I have never known anxiety until 2020 with diabetes and COVID19! As a mum I have thrown myself into everything diabetes and just completed a Level 2 course in Understanding the Care and Management of Diabetes. It is very scary to think what the future may hold for him but I know he can do anything he puts his mind to. Been a bit of a lurker on here so thought best time to join and say hello!
I am married, we have 3 children and come under Derby hospital trust. They have been brilliant from the beginning until now.
With it being Diabetes Week I am throwing myself out there to pass on information to friends and family!!
Look forward to chatting, helping or getting help!!
Anna

Welcome @Anna S 🙂

It’s great your son is carb counting. That helps so much. It sounds like he’s doing very well 🙂 Type 1 is a massive learning curve and the first few months are hard.

I have three children too, but none have diabetes. One does have another medical condition though, and so I understand the worry and fears. It sounds like you’re doing the right things - finding out as much as you can about diabetes. Knowledge is power 🙂

I don’t have a Libre but many people here do.

Hi Anna and welcome to the forum! It has certainly been a strange year. My daughter diagnosed in lockdown on 1st May. So glad you have joined and can add your experience to our group. My daughter has the libre (as do I) and we find it such a huge help.

Hi and welcome. There’s never been a better time to be diabetic in terms of management but even so it’s still a huge adjustment. Well done for getting so involved.

Well if he had thoughts of becoming an astronaut or a deep sea diver then yeah his future might be tricky possibly …. OTOH it shouldn't stop him doing much else he fancies, simply if we want to do whatever it is, we usually find a way to do it and stay safe while we are. yeah it's difficult to begin with - but there again driving was to begin with, wasn't it? - but we soon learn how to do different things with each of our hands and feet whilst knowing what's on every side of our vehicle and also knowing what other road users are about to do and sometimes that's 6th sense anyway! Well diabetes is the same.

Thank you. He did laugh when I was reading about certain jobs he possibly couldn't do.

Welcome to the forum @Anna S .

Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis, but pleased that he is taking it in his stride.
There is so much to learn at the start, but it will help him a lot that he has already started carb counting. As Jenny has said it doesn’t need to stop him doing pretty much anything, it just takes a bit of organisation and planning.

Come back with absolutely any questions that you have, and feel free to have a rant. Plenty of us do now and then.

Welcome to the forum @Anna S

Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis. But glad you have de-lurked so we can get to know you better. 🙂

I know some of the team at Derby from some volunteering I have been doing for a few years with the Diabetes Technology Network, including a consultant who has T1 herself and is absolutely brilliant!

I‘m sure the paeds team are every bit as awesome.
