A MOTHER who underwent an operation to treat her obesity but kept it a secret from her family continued to eat so much the food backed up and suffocated her, an inquest heard.

Dianne Bernadette Cooper-Clarke, 64, was found dead at her home in Barripper, Camborne, after food clogged her throat and stopped her breathing.

Born in Trinidad in the West Indies, she had gastric bypass surgery in March 2010 following problems with her weight. The inquest in Truro was told how the retired midwife's oesophagus, the tube leading down to the stomach, had swollen in size because her stomach was unable to hold the amount she was eating.

Food had built up all the way to her throat, which caused her death on December 9 last year.
