SOUTH Shields MP David Miliband will join the fight against diabetes in the borough tomorrow.
A mobile testing unit will be parked up in King Street, South Shields, to offer tests to people in the borough.
Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.
Complications from the condition can affect the eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves and feet.
There are two main forms of diabetes ? Type 1 and 11 ? and both are on the increase, with 7,821 estimated sufferers in South Tyneside.
That accounts for five per cent of the population ? compared to 4.3 per cent nationally ? and it is estimated the number of borough sufferers is likely to soar to 9.8 per cent.
Type I cannot be avoided, and accounts for 15 per cent of cases.
