Hello!
Monday again - it comes around so fast! I’ve now completed 9 weeks on Mounjaro and things are going pretty well.
This hasn’t been a huge week for weight loss, but I have gone down a few ounces - so I am confident all is well on that front and the body is just doing its thing in preparation for the next weight drop.
Symptom wise, nothing major to report apart from feeling cold. Apparently this is fairly common and I am certainly experiencing it. Very unusual for me as for the last 6 or 7 years I have been constantly too hot. Definitely feeling chilly this week though. Brrrr!
Fitness wise, things are going really well. I have treated myself to a walking pad (a small treadmill) so that I can get more steps in at home. Really pleased with it - great to be able to stroll along while watching TV. I mostly work from home, so getting enough steps in over a day can be challenging - this really will be a game changer on that front.
Gym is going well - still using the EGym facilities and I am definitely building some skeletal muscle. I have signed up for a 6 week ‘Ladies that Lift’ course, which will start in a couple of weeks. This will teach me basic weight lifting techniques, so I can really start building some muscle. Very excited about this - I suspect I’ll be the oldest, fattest and most unfit person in the group but I don’t care - I can’t wait to learn this new skill. A huge and important tip for anyone starting their Mounjaro journey is to do some strength training (if possible). You will lose muscle on a weight loss drug - you need to keep as much as you can and if possible, develop more - very important in diabetes management! Muscle uses glucose. The benefits of strength training are immense - and particularly for ladies over 40, as we start to lose between 3 and 8% a year! Time to get those dumbbells out of the cupboard…
I’m feeling so much better in general now that I am 4 months in to my health transformation. I think back to November and can really see and feel the difference. When you think about what a short time 4 months is, it’s remarkable how much you can improve your health circumstances in such a short time. It also flies by if you have the right attitude. You can make a healthier lifestyle a miserable chore, or you can grab the bull by the horns and make it something you enjoy. Don’t focus on all the things you can no longer do and eat - make it about what you can do, eat and enjoy. It’s about forging a new way to be - make it something you enjoy and can take pride in.
Final thought for this week. Mounjaro is a tool - not a magic wand. You still need to make it work for you by eating right and getting active. You will see a lot of criticism for users of weight loss medications - that its somehow lazy or cheating. It isn’t - especially when part of diabetes management. It’s a proven fact that diabetes makes success with these medications slower - so you definitely have to put the work in. Don’t let anyone downplay your achievements!
