So, I apologise in advance for sounding a bit moany, but am in need of some help on the motivation front.
Despite the usual changes to diet - low carbs etc and even exercising I am seeing no improvement. Today, for eg I went on a 5 mile brisk walk, had vegetable soup for lunch with a bit of cheese, some nuts and half an apple. For dinner I had daal, spinach and a salmon fish cake with under 100 grams of new pots in it. An hour after it my BG was 12.7, 2 hrs later 11. The lowest I have been today is 6.4 after the walk and before lunch.
I haven't once slipped up and had a bit of cake or whatever since diagnosis (I know, very easy having only just started). But just want to see some results. Grrr:(

Hello Stephknits, I was diagnosed just over a year ago and am at last in the 5's (last HbA1c was 5.4). It does take a while and a lot of patience. I don't know if you have weight to loose? That can also slow things up. You know that you are doing the right thing and I think that it will come. A dietician that I met told me to try a brisk ten minute walk after each meal rather than trying to do thirty minute of exercise which sends my BG up for quite a while. This seems to help. Maybe try that? It does sound as though your numbers are a little better so you will just have to keep at it. If it delays or better still prevents further damage to your body it is worth trying anything. I get fed up too at times, so you are not alone. We are so lucky to have the lovely people on this forum to help us. You have made the big decision to take charge of your care which is the best thing that you can do. Brilliant! It takes courage, willpower and determination which you clearly have. Don't beat yourself up, it will come. Every little helps, as the old lady said when she p**d in the sea. I am sending you a virtual hug (). Hang in there it really will be worth it and you will succeed. 🙂

Daal is made of split peas usually, so how many g of carb in it? Plus the spuds .....

Soaked split peas of any kind are high carb, Even garden peas are carby but at least there's some cellulose to compensate a bit. With mushy's, ALL the carb is immediately available and will spike - Marrowfats do exactly the same.

You were only diagnosed a couple of months ago, and this is a marathon not a sprint. You are doing the right things, but the effects of good work are slowly cumulative. Keep at it - you will get there. If it takes a bit of chemical assistance, so be it. (Read this with a 'been there, done that' sympathetic tone of voice!)

I found it helped to concentrate on just one thing - in my case, major weight loss. If you can focus on one of the things you want to change, try to ignore all the things you can't achieve immediately and it will all fall into place eventually.

Diet and exercise takes time and yet you have already seen one 6.4. Carry on as you are in a few weeks there will probably be many more 6.4s and a few 5s will start to make their appearances.

It took me a few months to get down from the 9s and 10s to the 5s and 6s and then a few more months to get down to the 4s and 5s.

Where are you going in such a hurry?

Beans and pulses are generally OK if not overdone. They contain oligosaccharides, carbs which do not get digested by enzymes but which are broken down by bacteria in the intestine. Typically they give you wind but don't lift your BG levels too much. Spend your time experimenting with food types and quantities. It takes time but a picture will develop.

many thanks all, just what I needed🙂 I do realise things are not going to change over night and I thought for quite a while before posting as I do hate coming across as wingey! Honestly, in real life I hardly mention the diabtes - too busy talking about knitting..

I really like the idea of trying 10 mins of exercise after eating - will fit in better with days at work.

Also, had no idea about the peas - am afraid that with the science talk I tend to find I have Radio 2 in my head!

I like the idea of concentrating on one thing, so will try putting into practice the 10 mins of exercise.

I know I don't need to be in a hurry (I have a whole lifetime to moan about the condition) but I guess some days you feel like a boost that doesn't involve cake.

So thanks again, job done!🙂

If there's a good place to whinge, this is it. We've all been there and can always offer tips about what dug us out of a particular hole. Keep smiling! 🙂
