Changes to diabetic testing equipment could save Pharmac $10 million annually, but a Southland mother says children's lives are worth more than that.
Submissions on Pharmac's proposal to change suppliers closed yesterday, and Pharmac is expected to issue a release today.
Alison Deaker's 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago, Deaker said.
"Type 1 diabetes is a life-threatening condition, it is common knowledge to the Government and to Pharmac," she said.
Testing meters and strips had to be on hand at all times, and had to be 100 per cent accurate as a diabetic's condition could change in a few minutes, Deaker said.
