Is there a bog standard BG system manufacturer used my most PCT's.

Or do GP prctices dole out what the local PCT prefers, I only say this as when I went for my fist appt for bloods last week I was told, maybe incorrectly that I would be provided with a BG meter etc. When I see the DSN and GP in a couple of weeks

I may be pleasantly surprised.

I've got a feeling that most of them just dole out whatever they have in the cupboard that has been left by the reps, although one or two people lately have reported that their PCTs are only prescribing strips for one selected meter in order to save costs. The meters are pretty cheap (or free from a lot of manufacturers), it's the strips that are an expensive and continuing cost.

Meters are usually doled out to practices by the company reps, they are usually cheap but the consumables (ie Test Strips) are very expensive.
I think that whatever your DSN has the most of is what you'll get, or as you say, you could be surprised and be offered a choice.
Good luck!

I got a meter given to me too, and was told the practice is given them by the reps so that they prescribe the strips.🙂

The freestyle lite seems to make quite a few apperences in the hands of newly diagnosed

I was given the Microdot in September. Have seen other threads saying it may not be the best out there :-( But it is the only one I have ever used so cannot really comment on whether it is good or not.

Blood glucose meters are not actualy on prescription, so if you are given one then it's what the reps have left as others have said.
Many meter companies do provide then though if you ring and ask them.

Just to add, you don't have to have the meter that you're given. You can always change at any time and ask your practice to change your test strip prescription.
