Nine out of ten student nurses would not have taken a degree without bursaries worth up to £20,000, a survey has revealed.
The Tory government plans to scrap bursaries in 2017 and replace them with loans, but unions say the move is “wrong and disgraceful.”
This week’s spending review said that next September will be the last year of the bursary that enables around 15,000 students to study to become nurses.
A survey of 2,000 student nurses by Britain’s biggest public sector union Unison a shows 90% of were in receipt of an NHS bursary.
The union is also concerned over plans to introduce a new potentially costly system that means newly qualified nurses will end up earning just £22,000 but will have debts of more than £50,000.
