Nuts instead of carbs may aid diabetes control

Replacing that daily muffin with a handful or two of nuts may help people with diabetes better control their blood sugar and cholesterol levels, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that when people with type 2 diabetes replaced some of their usual carbohydrates with about a half-cup of mixed nuts each day, the study participants' blood sugar and "bad" cholesterol levels dipped slightly over three months.

No s**t Sherlock! 😱 🙄

Good to see that you are so impressed with this startling revelation:D. Wonder if you would get the same results with a nutty chocolate muffin:confused:

Is this going to be the new 7 a day, or can I stick to my walnuts?

Walnuts are very good for yer cholesterol (the HDL, or they reduce the LDL, I forget which now LOL) but Almonds is apparently really good for your brain and your moods, so the mixed nuts are prolly quite good for a lot of things they didn't note ... unfortunately none of them are ever so good for yer gums if some of yer teeth ain't actually your own .....

Could be quite economic just sucking an Almond, bet it last ages.:D

:

How many diabetics have a "daily muffin" ?

As opposed to the never in a lifetime muffin that I always eat, you mean?

There is always going to be someone 🙄 I know quite a few non-diabetics that start the day with a muffin - usually filled with egg and bacon or sausages.

But considering that a breakfast muffin (which is what they are meaning here) is about 25g carb (based on Sainsbury's basics) then that can't be much worse then a bowl of cereal?

The muffin-mongers of the UK will be devastated at this threat to their livelihoods! 😱

Drury Lane could become an unemployment blackspot.

Poor old Nell, what will become of her? 'Who will buy my much maligned muffins?' :(

Err they using American Muffins, as like most things American they don't do small versions...

Mind you I have noticed the extreme low carb evangelists have been using this bit of information to sing the praises of extreme low carbing

There are a few obese Type2's on forums who do an extreme lowcarb/high fat diet and reckon calories don't come into the equation so nuts will be OK for them I suppose. Then there are those in that category who are willing to try the extreme 600 low calories diet touted as the miracle cure for themselves. So it seems that calories do matter to them.....

I rewatchd an old Horizon program (2008) of youtube, based on Atkin's diet... Transpires' that Calories do count! As after they dispelled some of the theory behind fat burning etc... A Study that was done in 2007 following a large group of people following 1 of 4 weight lose diets (Atkins being one of them) when the researchers ploughed through all the food diaries, they actually found that those that had followed Atkins actually ate less calories!

Do you know the Muffin Man?
