Hi All
I am just 1 month into my type 1 diagnosis and still getting used to my insulin and managing the dreaded carbs vs insulin battle. I have been experiencing terrible headaches in the morning and my DN thinks I may be having hypos in my sleep  I am reducing my Lantus to 14 from 16and am now setting an alarm for 2.30 am to check my blood 🙄. Is this normal until everything settles down?.

Have just bought the Carbs and Cals book which is very interesting. However...had a pasta meal last night and estimated I needed 7 units of Apedra...2 hours later blood sugar was 4.5 and was feeling very odd😱. It feels like I have started a new job...so much to learn and think about. It`s quite reassuring to read the posts from experienced Type 1s and see that it`s not an exact science.

Taking Lantus at night and Apedra at meal times 6 - 7 units.

Yes, I'm afraid it is quite common to experience lows in the night after diagnosis, I had quite a few and needed to reduce my lantus drastically. When you are diagnosed they usually try to set your doses a little on the low side to then try and work up to an appropriate dose, but sometimes that just doesn't work. The headaches, if they are caused by going low in the night, are what are known as 'hypo hangovers' - hangovers without the alcohol!

I hope your night tests shed light on the problem 🙂

Re the pasta, this is one of those foods that digests quite slowly. When my son was on injections (he's on a pump now) we used to have to split the injection into two halves to cope with pasta, otherwise he would have a hypo about an hour after eating, and then be high later on. So what we did was inject half upfront and half two hours later.

There sure is a lot to learn about type 1, and after 8 years we still pick up new stuff. There's a bit of science, a bit of creativity, and a little bit of black magic I think! 🙂

Well hurrah...having reduced the Lantus I am now headache free... night test revealed no hypos on 14 units...think I was over doing it previously. I am just impatient to get stable but realise that I am in this for the long journey and Rome wasn't built in a day. Thanks for the replies x
