It is my first day here, I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 months ago. My mother and sister are also diabetic so this is unfortunately not new to me. However, I am also very fortunate to have a friend who is a Dr as my own GP/team are not the greatest.
My best tool to learn and manage my condition so far is my CGM.

Hello @Seasidedwell Welcome to the forum feel free to post/lurk ark questions none to small or to silly

Hi @Seasidedweller, Happy New Year
welcome to the forum, hope you get all the information and advice you seek

Happy New Year to you @Seasidedweller and welcome to the forum. Can I ask how you found out about the forum? I wasn't told about it by my diabetes nurse but she did tell me about Diabetes UK website. I did quite a bit of my own research as I couldn't find much information about regaining weight. This forum has been very helpful and supportive. I have modified my diet to help manage my blood glucose levels using the information and tips from forum members.
Wishing you well on your journey to manage your diabetes

Thank you @silver minion
I found this forum via google searches. I have not yet seen a diabetes nurse or specialist, until then I have been self educating and managing my diabetes through medication and diet.

Welcome to the forum @Seasidedweller - glad you’ve found us 🙂

Good to hear you have a friendly GP to check things with. Were you told the result of your HbA1c at diagnosis? This is likely to have been a number above 47mmol/mol (but may have been quite a bit higher!). Were you offered any medication to begin with?

Are you self-funding your CGM? Which system are you using?

Thank you @everydayupsanddowns

I had two HbA1c tests about a month apart. One at 69mmol/mol and the 2nd one at 65mmol/mol which confirmed diabetes. It also turned out that around 2019 it was 48mmol/mol however this was never passed on to me. This fact really upset me however I am putting it aside for now whilst I deal with this more pressing situation (high cholesterol, fatty liver, ATS, and potentially high blood pressure). I have since had another test which was 56mmol/mol about 3 weeks ago.

I was offered medication after my 2nd blood test - Metformin fast release 1 then 2, then 3 per day over 3 weeks. 2-3 tablets daily gave me stomach crumps and terrible diarrhoea. I was then put on the long release metformin - 2 per day. This is working very well for me.

Re CGM - I applied for the free sample that Abbott offer however also funded one whilst waiting for the sample to arrive. This will give me almost a month of data to help me, it has been the greatest asset so far.

I hope the above helps.

Thank you, I want to try and hit it hard and see how it goes. Hope you are doing well too.
Hitting too hard can sometimes cause some issues with eyes and nerves as a sudden reduction in carbs and introduction of meds will reduce glucose levels quickly and the body needs to adjust.
Estimating the carbs you have been having and reducing by a third for a week or so, then another third etc until you get where you need to be can be gentler on your system.
